This is a gorgeous picture book written in rhyming verse, about a snail who travels around the world on the tail of a humpback whale. When the whale becomes beached, the snail is able to save its life by writing a message using its slime trail, showing that even small people can make a difference.

The illustrations, done using pencil, ink, watercolors, colored pencils, and crayons, are vibrant and detailed, and the effect is visually stunning. Recommended for ages 5-8, and due to the rhyming verse, this would make a great read-aloud!

This is a story about a relationship between a snail and a whale and their travels and adventures together. There is a lot of rhyming and literary elements that take place in this book. This book also allows students to see that although you may look differently you could become best friends for

life.

This story uses poetry excellently to tell the tale of friendship. It sends a great message about being humble and appreciating the beauty of the natural world. It also proves that even if you are small and a problem seems huge there is nothing that can stop you when you put your mind to it.

A wonderful story about a snail who wants to see the world and the whale who takes him on the journey.

We loved it! It was so sweet. I asked my daughter to predict what could happen to the whale if it was ashore. We also enjoyed looking for the tiny snail on each page. Great illustrations!

I read this one in connection with Earth Day of all things and the kids really loved it. The whale takes the snail on a worldwide adventure and in the moment of crisis snail alerts the local school house that whale has beached himself. It was a fun rhyming text, worth the read.

A lovely story about friendship and how and small creature can help a large, powerful animal. I didn't feel that the illustrations were as enchanting as other Donaldson books, but this is a minor whinge.

Maybe it was just PMS, but I teared up reading about how the the townspeople saved the whale. Oh, sorry, was that a spoiler? Come on, it's a kid's book. Anyway, very attractively illustrated; lots of recognizable animals & plants & ships & what-not for my not-quite-2-year-old to recognize. A

heart-warming story of adventure and friendship and a community (ethnically diverse! yaay!) pulling together to save a whale. Plus, told in rhyme. What's not to like?

I liked this book because of the illustrations and the underlying ideas of environmental consciousness. The illustrations in the book are beautiful and enhance the words of the story. The snail and the whale travel to many places and the illustrations vividly show the scenery of the areas they

visit. The underlying main idea of the story is about the impact that humans unconsciously have on the animals and environment around them.

I liked this book for a number of reasons. The first reason I like the book is because of the language. I liked the language because it rhymed and it flowed very well. For example one of the lines is, "This is a rock as black as soot, and this is a snail with an itchy foot." I find rhyming very
Show More
interesting and fun to read. The second reason I like the book is because of the illustrations. There are many interesting pictures throughout the book. The pictures in this book are very colorful and show many different aspects of what is at the ocean. When there was the word small in the book they wrote it very small, and when there was the word big it was written very big. This made the pages much more interesting as well. The main idea of this book is to teach about the animals that are in the ocean and what goes on by the sea shore.

In my opinion this is a great story filled with exciting adventure, friendship, and acts of kindness. I enjoyed the illustrations in this story because they enhanced the plot as the snail and the whale traveled together. The illustrations show readers some of the different climates the two friends
Show More
travel to. For example, they travel to places where there are volcanos, all the way to where ice bergs are found. The illustrations show clear differences in the places the snail and the whale travel to, allowing for readers to follow along to the story with ease. The graphics are also extremely eye catching; readers will be entirely engaged. The writing in this story is so engaging and the pace of the rhyming can be adjusted from reader to reader. The overall message in this story is to follow your heart, never give up, remain open to friendships, and explore life: which is exactly what the snail and the whale accomplish!

A charming tale of a snail that hitches a ride on a humpback whale, and gets a round-the-world tour of natural wonders. Toward the end of the tale, the whale gets beached, and the snail helps rescue the whale by calling in the local community to help. Told as a poem-story that is really fun to read

aloud.
