Written and illustrated by award winning author and illustrator, Kadir Nelson, If You Plant a Seed relays a simple but powerful lesson. Rabbit and mouse plant a few seeds and after nurturing the plants and waiting patiently, they are rewarded with delicious vegetables. However, when a few birds
Show More
show up to share in their bounty, will rabbit and mouse ‘plant seeds’ of selfishness or kindness? Nelson uses very few words, but instead relies on his incredibly expressive illustrations to tell the story. The clever use of panels suggest the passage of time, while alternating with double-page spreads to help the reader focus on the heart of the story. The illustrations, created by oil on canvas, beautifully convey the message of selflessness, acceptance and friendship.

The welcoming illustrations will catch the eye of young children. The message of the story will attract parents and teachers alike. Recommended for pre-K - 2nd grade audience. A perfect addition to any teaching tolerance curriculum.

This book is super cute! I enjoyed with what was the meaning behind the book, it's very deep. Pictures were very detailed. The book was mainly about with what you plant you will grow that, therefore if you plant joy and happiness then that is what will grow. If you plant anger then that is what
Show More
will grow.

I first picked up this book because I thought that a friend who has a lot of trouble with rabbits in her garden would be ruefully amused by the picture of a rabbit hovering over a little bit of growth. She loved the book; we three adults all thought that the paintings were extremely beautiful and
Show More
effective, and she decided that she wanted a copy for her great-grandchildren.

She read the book to her three or four year-old great-granddaughter, who loved the book. Then the child's older brother came in and started criticizing the little girl. They got in a fight. Their mother started yelling.

GG reminded the little girl about the book. She took it to her brother and asked him to read it to her. They took it to heart, and there was instant peace!

"If You Plant a Seed" is a book about why you should share and why you shouldn't be selfish. At first it starts off as a lesson about growing plants, but soon turns into a compare/contrast on selfishness and sharing when other animals would like a part of the food. The writing is very quick to read
Show More
and there are plenty of pages that don't even have words on them. The illustrations are well done and quite adorable. This book is best for kids in Kindergarten and 1st grade, possibly 2nd grade. If I were to use this book, it would be to promote sharing in the classroom.

This is a picture book about a mouse and a rabbit that decide to plant a garden. They learn that planting with care, love, and kindness will yield a much better garden and plants. They also get help and support from other animals, which also shows them that kindness is always a good choice.

A story about kindness and generosity with animals as the models.

This book compares the life cycle of a plant to the life cycle of being kind vs being selfish. This is an excellent picture book for young readers who are still learning to deal with their emotions. Teachers can use this for teaching about the life cycle of plants. They can also use this for
Show More
lessons about kindness, which is crucial in creating a safe welcoming classroom environment, and about sharing, which some children struggle with.
