A Sick day for Amos McGee drew me in right away with its huge, gorgeous yellow stripes. They are unashamedly planted right on the cover and continue to march through most of the pages of the book. Besides the stripes, Philip Christian Stead also takes a unique, and extremely successful, risk by
Show More
writing the main character not as a child or an animal, but as an old man. The illustrations are striking and beautifully drawn while the story is a lovely mix of humor and gentleness.

A Sick Day for Amos McGee is a wonderful story about a man who works and makes friends at the zoo. one day he can't make it into work so his friends come to visit him. Children will love it and adults will enjoy reading it to them.

The old-fashioned, muted illustrations in this book make it a definite keeper. Along with using this book with preschool or kindergarten children in a unit about animals, it would also be a great addition to a discussion about compassion and empathy.

This book just won the Caldecott Medal for the best illustrations, and also won the Best Illustrated Children's Book Award by the New York Times. The illustrations are a delight with the text, in a realistic format, and the artist made the character of Amos stand out even more by cladding him in
Show More
green. In some pages, everything would be a kind of grey pencil with the only colors on the characters—Amos and the animal/s. The text didn't rhyme, but it followed a rhythm and involved animals at the zoo. Since many kids love the zoo and love at least one animal housed there, I can see how this would appeal to young audiences. The word choice of the text is also good—it paints great pictures in the head. (Example, with some fabulous vocabulary underlined by me: “Every morning when the alarm clock clanged, he swung his legs out of bed and swapped his pajamas for a fresh-pressed uniform.” (pg 1).

Amos McGee gets up early every day to catch the six o’clock bus to work at the zoo. Once at work he made his rounds to visit his good friends, and spend time playing with them. So, one day when he’s feeling sick and has to stay home, his friends take the bus out to spend time with him.

Amos McGee has a routine; he gets up early, puts on his uniform, eats his breakfast, and then takes the bus to his work, the City Zoo. There, he has various “jobs” with the animals, to include playing chess, running races, and reading books. One day, however, he becomes sick, and does not show

up for work. The animals become restless and decide to come visit him at home.

Amos McGee was an immediate hit when I read it aloud to my first and second grade classes, not just for the adorable illustrations but for the funny and cute story. It’s a warm reminder that while we may count on people to be there every day, they are in fact counting on us just as much. Love this book!

Amos Magee is an old man who thrives on routine. He lives a modest life. Amos works at the zoo and gives special attention to several animals that display anxieties. When Amos gets sick one day and is unable to go to work, the animals are distraught and miss their friend terribly. Knowing something
Show More
must be very wrong, the animals decide to take the bus to go visit and care for their friend. The animals now take the role of caregivers. The emotions and concerns of the animals is a reciprocal relationship with Amos. In the end, Amos and the animals prepare for a good nights sleep and look forward to returning to business as usual the next day.

Though maybe more appreciated by an adult audience this story of friendship is beautifully and simply written and illustrated.

Amos McGee is a zookeeper who every animal loves. He loves every animal at the zoo and when he takes a day off the animals decide to visit him. The illustrations are wonderful and show the personality of all of the animals so well.

This book would be a great book for students because it teaches them about compassion. A lesson could be done on how best to care for those who are sick, or those who need help. Another thing I loved about the book was the use of the pictures. I felt like I could follow the story without really
Show More
even reading the book. There is even a page with no words; you have to follow the animal’s actions.

This is the story of compassion and friendship. Amos McGee is a zoo keeper who goes to the zoo, not only to care for the animals, but to visit all his animal friends at the zoo. One say Amos winds up sick and doesn't show up to care for his friends, so they decide to go visit their friend Amos.

This beautifully illustrated Caldecott winner is a classic modern tale of a zookeeper and his animal friends. A fine text for read-alouds. Author and illustrator were clearly influenced by Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are--at least in terms of text structure.

Caldecott winner, "A Sick Day for Amos McGee" is a tale of friendship. When their friend Amos gets sick and does not make it to the zoo (like he normally does), the concerned animals Amos hangs out with get on a bus and visit Amos. They take care of him and nurse him back to health.

The story is
Show More
heartwarming and great for teaching children about the importance of friendship. The illustrations use a pale color scheme but bring the characters to life.

Super cute simple story about the friendship between a zookeeper and some zoo animals. Great soft illustrations.

This is such a sweet and simple story. The child at my daycare could listen to it over and over (and they do). The illustrations are just beautiful. I wish I could hang them in my house. Such a great read aloud story! And from Ann Arbor too!

So far, I think that this book has my favorite illustrations. I have found that alot of books have gread artwork, or cute cartoons that fit the story, but this books illustrations were something really special. The book shows us how to help our friends who help us, and the illustrations really
Show More
express that here. So far, the two page spread of the animals waiting at the bus stop is by far the best picture I have seen in a childrens book.

I avoided this book for a long time, which is surprising because it is a Caldecott winner. I feel that something about the cover put me off, though I can't pinpoint what it was. After reading it though, I found it to be an extremely endearing story about the man (Amos McGee) and his friends from
Show More
the zoo. The artwork is pleasingly vintage in style. For use in a classroom, it could be helpful when introducing new verbs or perhaps when presenting different verb tenses. I think this could be used with English Language Learners as well.

This is a cute book about firnedship. Everday after breakfast Amos would go to the zoo. He would play chess with the elephant, run races with a turtle, wipe the rhino's nose and many other things. One day Amos became sick, instead of going to the zoo he stayed in bed. The animals started to worry
Show More
so they took the bus to see Amos. Once they arrived at Amos' house the animals did the activities that they had missed with sick Amos. The animals stayed the night, all curled up around Amos. The illustrations were very well done. The mixture between pencil and color created a lovely contrast. The daces of the animals and Amos really shoe their emotions. I think that this book is a great tale of friendship, any child will love it and relate.

This is one of the best books that I read this term. It is about a zookeeper and his daily rountine at the zoo which includes activities he does with certain animals. When he gets sick, he stays home leaving the animals to wonder why he's not visiting them. The animals end up visiting him at home
Show More
and doing similar activities. This is a fun story for a read aloud.
