Elise couldn’t wait for the day that Mia’s red coat would become hers. She loved that coat, red as a poppy and with enough pockets to hide her feather collection. Elise dreamed of wearing it.

Tucked into the red coat, Elise walked with Mia to school. But on the way, she saw a girl sitting with her mother. It was cold and they were wearing only summer clothes; they were freezing. Elise couldn’t forget the shivering girl.
The next day, she tried to ignore the girl and her mother by looking at the ground just the way everyone else did as they quickly walked past them. But that didn’t help.
What will Elise do?

The target audience for this picture book is the young reader, ages three through seven, preschool through second grade. This touching tale helps the child develop understanding and empathy as they see what Elise chooses to do when she faces the dilemma of a young girl and her mother, homeless, hungry, and in need.
The simply-told story illustrates compassion and the importance of caring for others, of understanding how each person can make a difference.

Waiting for something you really want is hard, but seeing someone in need and feeling that, no matter how much it means to you, they need it more and you can help is priceless. Giving to others is truly what makes us human.
Caveat: perhaps the theme is a little to0 vague for some of the younger
I was disappointed that I could find no translator to credit (author is French).
The illustrations by Louis Thomas are lovely, brilliant, and fun!
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or public library!

absolutely perfect. She can’t wait for it to be hers. The day comes when she gets the coat. She wears it to school but on the way, they see a mom and a little girl out in the cold with no coats. She goes back home but feels yucky because something is wrong. She realizes that people look at their phones, they look away, they did everything to pretend not to notice the mom and the little girl in the cold. The next day Elise said “Hi”. Elise accidentally got locked out of school while it was cold, but not too cold. What I love is that the author doesn’t tell you what Elise did, you see it in the pictures. You see it in the authors words that her thoughts were enough to keep her warm. This book didn’t have to say Elise gave away her coat, no one made Elise giveaway her coat. Elise did it because it was the right thing to do and didn’t need to brag or point out that this good deed was done. I love this book! it’s well done and well-illustrated. The story is a joyful sadness that is important for kids to experience growing up. Show Less
