"Unique in its dual approach, Vintage Design Workshop offers two ways for knitters to create vintage-styled projects: by updating any vintage pattern to suit modern sizes and yarns, and by customizing modern patterns to take on a vintage look. As most knitters know, the internet is a huge and ready resource for free or highly affordable vintage knitting patterns. However, these easily available vintage patterns are usually in one size only and unfortunately not all of us have the 34" bust and tiny wasp waist silhouettes that epitomize many vintage styles. Instead of simply offering a smattering of updated patterns, Vintage Design Workshop goes one step further and proves how simple it is to update patterns yourself. Divided into two sections, the book first shows the reader how to translate and alter sizes from vintage patterns and gives advice on choosing substitutes for yarns that are out of production. The second section uniquely demonstrates how to adapt modern patterns to create a vintage silhouette, learning how to mix and match sleeves, necklines, or collars to the item of your choice. While this is not a pattern book, the author will use one vintage pattern throughout as separate tutorials on yarn substitution, sizing and gauge, deciding on alterations, adjusting shaping and length, and adding or altering details.
