This book by Chris van Wyk tells the story about Nelson Mandela's life and trials. It is written for elementary age children and is beautifully illustrated by Paddy Bouma in a realistic way. in the classroom, students could write a journal about a time when something wasn't fair to them and how

they overcame it, then afterwards listen to Mandela's story. This book is inspiring and could teach kids that they can be successful no matter what.

An inspiring story about a true hero. Nelson Mandela's story should be read by all elementary school children to learn how this famous leader overcome injustices in his world. This can be used as a continuing part of a child's social studies experience. Upper elementary students can use this book

to start their research on Mr. Mandela with a reenactment of an important part of his life as a culminating, year end activity.

Summary: This book is a biography that walks readers through the life of Nelson Mandela and how he came to be involved with a changing South Africa. The book first talks about Nelson growing up. He attended school until high-school and dropped out of university for disagreement with his professor.

When his father died, he moved in with a family who had strong views on the government. Due to this, Nelson got involved with freedom groups and protested the way the South African government was run. He escaped the country and came back under a fake name. 5 years later, he was arrested for protesting the government. He was held in jail for 27 years when finally the South African leader reached out to him and agreed that change needed to be done and apartheid needed to be outlawed. Once out of jail, Mandela made this happen. He continued to work with the ANC and created voting for South Africans. He was elected the first president of South Africa in 1994 thanks to his adding democracy to the country!

Argument: I really liked the way this book explained the details of Mandela's life. The book did it in a way that seemed like Mandela himself was telling the story which I think would really appeal to students. I think this book is important because it teaches students about something that is relatively recently going on in the world with the apartheid. It also helps them learn about other cultures and the way these cultures are sometimes treated. This book has a timeline of Mandela's life at the end and a glossary of terms, both of which I think are very important resources to have.

This book is very well organized and makes great use of illustrations and textual features. In the beginning of the book, a map of South Africa is shown. The map is labeled with pictures, names of countries, schools, animals, and key cities mentioned in the biography. This provides a good visual of

where everything in the story takes place. I like that the book is said in first person from Nelson Mandela's point of view. I also like the key events that are shared from Mandela's life.

For example, when his uncle informed him of his arranged marriage, Nelson says his uncle "had already picked a wife for each of us. We were shocked! We didn't want to get married, and so we decided to run away to Johannesburg." This shows an early sign of Nelson Mandela's sense of justice and independence. He wasn't someone who bowed down to authority if it didn't align with his own moral code or desires.

Another example of a key event in Mandela's life is when he joined the African National Congress (ANC) to create a wave of significant change for the lives of black people. The text goes on to say that, "we would protest peacefully by marching through the streets and demanding our freedom. We would not be ignored". I like that the book shares a specific way Mandela chose to create change in the lives of black people in a white dominated society. This book is very informational on South Africa's history and how it has become a democratic society over time.

The main idea of this book is to reveal the way South Africa has become a democratic society over time through sharing its history of segregation and the lack of freedom black people had in any governmental decisions. This book explains the order of events very well and also shows a timeline at the end of the book.

This picture book of Nelson Mandela's autobiography is a great source for children to lean about Nelson Mandela and his work in South Africa from birth to his presidency. This is an easy for children with supporting illustrations as well. I personally liked the structure of this book and found it

informative.

There is a glossary in the book as well as a timeline of Mandela's life. I really loved the glossary as it provided kid-friendly terms of social justice issues. I also found the timeline helpful as it basically summarizes the book.
