We do not recommend this book. A great deal of the claims made by the author can not be backed up by any sort of historical documentation or other sources. It is not good history.

This book is a little different in that it meanders through the seasons, liberally sprinkling the narrative with the native language, adding stories and anecdotes along the way. It's a great book to curl up with and just lose yourself in a different place for a few hours or as long as you can get

away. There are illustrations, photos, and stories about the struggle for tribal recognition that continues until this day. Included are the histories of institutionalized racism and the genocide that continued well into the 20th century. The Abenaki have set out to reclaim their culture, their history and their language in much the way that the Scots have renewed their efforts to reclaim theirs. It's not a story, not exactly a scholarly dissertation, and not fiction. Whatever it is, I enjoyed the journey
