Description

“I have something to tell you,” says your mother or father, wearing a downcast look, one that you haven’t seen before or at least not seen that often. “What’s wrong?” you think… You brace for the worst. But what you hear is something like, “Before I met your Dad”… Or a letter comes: “Dear… I don’t really know how to begin this. You don’t know me but…” Or the telephone rings. Or there is a knock at the door. On the other side of the conversation or on the other side of the door is a stranger who, with a few words or an improbably story that, nonetheless, at once rings true, becomes what you didn’t think you had: a brother, a sister, another sibling. You catch your breath. You freeze. You pause. You mumble awkwardly. And then, your whole world shifts.
