Description

Exhibited at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, the Japanese lacquer collection of Dr. Edmund J. Lewis is one of the world's finest. Spanning 400 years of Japanese artistic tradition, it comprises 88 exquisite lacquer objects, including writing-boxes, medicine- and pipe-cases, and lacquer paintings. Many important pieces are products of the renowned Meiji lacquer master Shibata Zeshin (1807-91) whose artistic legacy is well demonstrated in this collection. Handsomely produced and informative, this volume includes an original essay by Joe Earle, formerly Keeper of Far Eastern Art, Victoria & Albert Museum, who also wrote the catalogue entries.
