The protagonist of this story is a girl named Jolene. Jolene father dies and she does not want a stranger named Leroy to come and marry her mom. A good interesting book on single parents and how their children can be upset and irate at the new person joining the family.Jolene's father will always
Show More
be her father, but when she her step-father Leroy gets in the family, she has to conform to her mother's wishes. Even the author seems to be on the side with Leroy who will definitely bring happiness to her mom. A good novel for 4th graders.

Mister and Me is such a touching and endearing story. Jolene lives with her grandpa and mom. Jolene's dad has passed away years ago and she misses him. When "Mister" Leroy starts dating her mom Jolene is not happy at all, she doesn't want anyone replacing her dad or trying to move in on her family

of three. Jolene soon learns that Mister isn't as bad as he seems and he can actually teach her some things if she lets him. Mister and Me is a great novel for young readers. Students will love this story, especially those with step parents would appreciate it!

The book is a short story that takes place in Louisiana in the 1940's when segregation was still very prevalent. The story is told through Jolene's prospective who is a young girl still dealing with the death of her father when she was a baby. Her mother begins to become interested in a new man and
Show More
she is not accepting. Eventually she realizes that he is not so bad and accepts him into her life.

I enjoyed reading this book a lot and could see my third graders like it as well. In this story, that takes place in the 1940s, a young girl does not want anyone to take the place of her father, especially Leroy. She despises him as mush as she
Show More
loves her mom and grandpa. It is an interesting turn of events that finally lets her accept Leroy as a part of her family. I would use this book to teach students how life was in the 1940s and about how families can forgive and grow together.

Mister and Me is a cute tale of a young girl whose mother begins to date, and eventually, marries a new man after her father has passed. She does not take lightly into this new man intruding her life with her mother. But in the end, she fully accepts this man into her world.

I thought this was such
Show More
a cute story. It hit very close to home. When my own mother remarried, my little sister was not happy about it (and we hadn't lost my father). I would definitely use this story for younger generations. I think children at a young age can relate to Jolene and would sympathize with her, maybe even offer her encouragement about the fact she would have a new father-figure. I'd also use this with older generations. I think many children in this day and age can relate. I wonder what advice they would offer to someone like Jolene. Overall, this is a great book and an easy read.

What happens when a little girl tries to separate her mom from getting married. Jolene doesn't want her mom to get married and she does a lot of bad things to prevent it from happening. This story takes place during the 1940 at Louisiana. I would recommend this book to 6-12 that like realistic

fiction books.

This was a sweet story. I enjoy reading about books from this time in history. Although this book is set in a different time, I think that children would still be able to relate to the story.

After living her whole life with just herself, her mom, and her grandpa, a little girl named Jolene has to learn to accept a new man into her life. The story shows the struggles that she is having in changing the family that she's known so well and how hard it can be when a parent remarries. It's a
Show More
very sweet and touching story with some humor thrown in to keep it entertaining. I really enjoyed it.

Mister and Me reminds me a lot about Uncle Peter's Amazing Chinese Wedding. It's about a child that feels lonely and threatened that they will forever lose their special someone. In this book, Lorene goes through the struggle that Mister will take away her mother. But eventually, she learns to warm
Show More
up to him and allows her mother to marry him.

Jolene is a young girl who lives with her widowed mother and her grandfather in a small town in Louisiana. Jolene has a hard time coming to terms with the fact that her father is no longer around and when her mother starts to date a local man, Leroy, Jolene is everything but welcoming to him.
Jolene is protective of her mother and sassy to Leroy. Leroy tries to win over Jolene in every way possible, he cooks for her, buys her ice cream and peppermint sticks, takes her dancing, and loves her as his own child. But Jolene is hesitant and refuses to let Leroy in at first, but once she realizes that Leroy is not going to replace her father, she lets him in the family and loves him.
I related to this book a lot, when my mom started dating after my parents divorced, I refused to believe any man was good enough for my mom and I found faults in them, no matter how great they were to me and my mom. This can be a relatable topic to many children as well.

I loved this small chapter book. It resonated with me because I did not like my step father very much when I first met him, but now we are much closer. I enjoyed Holt's writing as she captures Jolene's feelings perfectly. The way she introduces the setting, not by outright saying when, but by
Show More
giving subtle nuances of the time period was nice. This book would be great for all children, especially those who may be dealing with the loss of a parent or parents remarrying.

Joelene tragically lost her father but is now gaining trust of another. Great story for kids who have lost a love one who need trust in someone else.

Jolene is a sassy young African American girl struggling with her father's death and the prospect of her mother bringing a new man into the family. The story is set in Louisiana during the 1940's when all public areas shared by blacks and whites were segregated. This plot component provides
Show More
opportunities for students to either identify with the characters or gain insight into the desegregation of discrimination, depending on their personal backgrounds or experiences. Holy masterfully develops characters that jump off the page and come alive in a way that children and adults alike would find inviting.

This story shows how people can change there feelings toward other people. I loved how Jolene is being over protective toward her mother and at the end changes her mind. This is a sad story how the little girl is struggling with having a new man coming into her mothers life. I love how her life
Show More
changes for better.

Jolene was just perfectly fine when her family only included her, her mother, and her grandpa. Growing up in a small mill town in Louisiana she had everything she needed. Everything changes when a new person enters the family though. It turns out better than Jolene ever expected it would.

I really
Show More
liked this book. It was very realistic and relatable because it is a story to familiar to a lot of children. I would use this is my classroom because not only is it relatable, it also has elements of history in it.

I LOVED THIS BOOK! This book was realistic in so many ways.It had realistic emotions and information on the time period. This was also a family getting some new member and an adjustment had to be made. But they worked it out.

Jolene may not remember much about her father, but she certainly doesn't one a new one. Readers will enjoy Jolene's sassy attitude, and the ease with which she speaks her mind. She loves her family, but she feels herself, her mother, Ruby, and her grandpa are "enough." She has no intentions of
Show More
trying to get along with her mother's new love interest, Leroy, even after he asks Ruby to marry him.
Jolene makes a big mistake, and during the process of trying to make things right again, she starts to change her opinion of Leroy. She starts to see his good qualities, and in the end, realizes the four of them can be a family.

Jolene doesn't want to accept that her mother will marry Leroy. Leroy tries so hard to "win" Jolene over but her attitude make it so hard for him to. She wants to believe that he is a mean guy but really he is a nice and a gentleman. I think this book book is real life because most kid doesn't want
Show More
to accept if their parents remarry anyone else and they would try anything to stop it.

I can not for some reason rate this book by the stars, but I give it the maximum rating. I really enjoyed this book. The book was written around the 1940's about an African American family. The family structure was the mother, the daughter, and the grandfather as the dynamic family and the
Show More
husband/father died when the daughter was 3 yrs. old. The mother started dating another man and the daughter was rebellious about the man and the mother's relationship with him. Finally toward the end of the novel the daughter accepted the other man. It also portrayed some racial issues that took place during that period of time. A couple of them were segregation at the movie show and that African Americans did not go to parties with the Caucasians. It was a real realistic novel and one that could be related to.

This book is a beautiful story of the transformation of a little girl. She grows so much through the story and it is seen by readers. It teaches the lesson that it is not always okay to judge some one from their appearance.

In Mister and Me, Jolene lives her mother, Ruby, and grandfather. Her mother finds happiness in Mister or Leroy, and they start dating. Jolene is not a huge fan of Mister. She finds every excuse, like him being loud and tall, for her mother not to date him. She is very protective over her mother;
she does not want to loose her to Mister. After cutting up her mothers red velvet fabric that she adores, Jolene realizes that she made a huge mistake and tries to make everything better with her family. In the event, she sees Mister's good qualities and learns to like him.

I really enjoyed this book because it shows that not everyone is what they appear on the outside. There is various sections of history in this novel to teach children. It is also a relatable topic for children whose parents have remarried or dated others who they have not liked.

This story takes place in Louisiana and is told from Jolene's point of view. The story was written during a time when segregation was prominent. Jolene's mother, Ruby, is a seamstress who works very hard to support her daughter. Ruby begins dating Leroy and Jolene is not happy about it. Jolene
Show More
begins to act out in hopes that Leroy will go away. Throughout the book Leroy tries hard to win Jolene over. Finally, Jolene realizes Leroy is not so bad after all. Ruby and Leroy get married and Jolene is happy for her mom and Leroy. I would recommend this book to grades 2-5. Children can relate to this story because many are without a father and may struggle with the same feelings Jolene has had to cope with.

In Minster and Me, Jolene mother starts dating a new man, named Leroy. Jolene is not to fond of this man and she finds every excuse not to accept him. Jolene is protective over her mother so she tries everything to get rid of Mr. Leroy. She really acts out to get rid of him and eventually she
Show More
realizes that she was wrong. Jolene sees the good in Mister Leroy and gives him a chance. I think this story would be great for an older class. Many children don't have a father figure in their homes so I'm sure a view kids could relate. Also this story was about acceptance which we could all learn from.

Jolene is a an adorable little girl that is filled with sassiness. She fears change in her life because she likes the way things are in her life at the moment. When she notices that her Leroy has taken interest in her mother she begins to act out in her own way because she does not want her father
Show More
to be replaced. In the end, she begins to form a bond with Leroy and accepts him in her little family and as a wedding gift gives both her mother and Leroy a quilt that she made out of many dresses and pieces of cloth that had sentimental value. This is a great book that many children with divorced parents, or just one parent in the picture could be able to relate to. It shows the way that a child can be possessive with his or her parents especially when someone new comes in the picture.
