One of those quiet, hauntingly evocative books that comes along only every once in a while.

It represents those quiet experiences of childhood, the ones that we remember perhaps not for any particular reason, but for the feel of a place or experience. It's like those times as a kid you had to visit

your grandmother's friend's apartment - or a rare book store with your uncle, or a neighbor's dusty, relic-filled attic - and weren't allowed to touch anything or do anything, but just wait. Everything was so strange and unusual - you did everything you could just to take it in, in stunned, perhaps awkward, silence. It's often in this intersection between children's worlds and the worlds of the old that the quiet, haunting moments of childhood manifest.

Keats conveys this this haunting quiet wonderfully through the spare text, relying mostly on his moody, dark illustrations. He doesn't stray far from signature style of combining paint with collage, but this time around the neighborhood Keats makes use of a darker pallette, adding a flair of mystery about his illustrations.

Apt. 3 by Ezra Jack Keats is a book about two little boys who hear music somewhere around them. The two boys, Sam and Ben go walking throughout the apartments to find where the music is coming from. They hear a harmonica playing. As they are walking, they hear people fighting, babies crying, and a

ballgame on tv. They finally find the music and they sit outside the apartment. The milk that was sitting beside the door suddenly disappears and the man invites them in. He is blind but he plays the harmonica for them and they all become friends. This book would be a good age for first or second graders.

This is a book about two brothers sneaking around their apartment building. They hear a harmonica playing and go on an adventure to find who is playing it. This could be a good book to build suspense and mystery for story time.

Apt. 3 is one of Ezra Jack Keats' more serious stories. Sam and Ben hear beautiful harmonica music coming from somewhere in their tenement. The brothers begin to explore their building and experience the sounds and smells that define their city. Their search leads them to the mysterious Apt. 3 and

the remarkable person who lives there. Unlike some of Keats' earlier books, Apt. 3 contains almost exclusively dark shades of purple, blue, and gray for pictures. The images look almost like Impressionist paintings with the clearly visible brushstrokes. I love this book because it introduces diversity and city life to young readers. I would recommend this book as a read-aloud book in kindergarten and first grade. Second and third graders could probably enjoy this story on their own.

Apt. 3 by Ezra Jack Keats is about a pair of brothers, Sam and Ben, who hear mysterious music coming into their apartment. They decide to follow the sound to figure out who is playing it.

The hunt through the apartment building gives Keats the opportunity to explore the community that is within the

walls of an apartment building. It's comprised of different ages, different ethnicities and different talents.

The search for the music results in the boys coming to know their neighbors better. Children reading the book are introduced to a multicultural cast as well as a blind musician. They will see how he's perfectly capable of living on his own and of making beautiful music. The book could be used as a starting point to introduce real life blind musicians, like Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, or Nobuyuki Tsujii.
