A sweet picture-book advice manual addressed to one particular girl - one suspects it was intended for co-author Paris Rosenthal, from her mother, celebrated picture-book author Amy Krouse Rosenthal - Dear Girl, is the sort of book that can be shared with all girls. Each two-page spread features a

letter, and piece of advice, from raising one's hand, because you have something intelligent to say, to getting to know people who are like AND unlike you.

An affirmational book, one which is made particularly poignant by the fact that Amy Krouse Rosenthal recently passed away, after penning an intensely moving piece about her husband for The New York Times, Dear Girl, doesn't offer anything especially earth-shattering, in the advice department. That said, the words of wisdom here, passed down from mother to daughter, are heartwarming and true. The artwork, done by Holly Hatam, have a fun collage/cartoon style. Recommended to anyone looking for inspirational, aspirational (rather than story-driven) picture-books for girls.

This charming book is a celebration of being true to one's self (even if that doesn't always fit into societal expectations of what being a girl should entail, such as long hair and a frilly dress) as well as a brief handbook for facing life head on -- whether it's making friends, being brave, or

simply making your bed. In simple language, the book touches upon a number of topics while still managing to feel light and airy. The illustrations add to this feeling by being fairly detail free and having splashes of bright color against white backdrops.

Dear Girl is an excellent book that can inspire many. It teaches young girls that it is okay to be themselves and that they are not alone. This book is a great addition to any library.
