I love Kate's mom's reaction to her question. Kate's mom does not avoid or dismiss it she calmly explains that Timmy is different but in a lot of ways he is also the same. I love that this story focuses on Timmy's strengths rather than his weaknesses.I think this is a good book for teachers of all

grades to read with their student's. The thing that comes to mind when I read this book was don't judge a book by its cover. Kate learns that even though Timmy looks different and acts a little different they have a lot in common and they become good friends.

This book made me uncomfortable at times because it used the word 'retard' and 'retarded' multiple times. I also didn't like the comments that Tina was making and the questions she was asking. I do think it is realistic, but it isn't necessary in a children's book. Kids don't need to learn those

words.

I think this book is an easy way for kids to learn about down syndrome. I wasn't crazy about the book but I think it had good explanations.

This is the story of a boy named Timmy, who has Down Syndrome. It's almost a bit too realistic. I was not crazy about some of the word choices used or questions characters asked in regards to Timmy and his difference. I might use this book for K-2 just to introduce Down Syndrome if I did not find
Show More
something else more suitable.

An age appropriate explanation of the effects down syndrome has.

This book shows the natural curiosity that kids have when they come across an individual with a disability. Sometimes, a difference may be obvious. In this book, Timmy's difference is and Kate talks to her mom about it. I feel that Shriver did a good job allowing the mother to calmly explain and go
Show More
over how differences make us who we are. Then, Kate gets to know Timmy and creates a bond with him. I like how this book creates a positive outlook on how there are differences and similarities with all of us, but we are all people that deserve respect. Kate learns that Timmy may need help with certain things, but he can do and appreciate a lot of the same things she does, like how he loves his family. The big picture of this book is acceptance.

I liked this book, because it did discuss how many children feel about children who have a disability. In the book, a little girl sees a boy who has a disability and is at first scared. She realizes they are different, but after talking to Timmy and playing with him, she sees that they are more
Show More
alike than not. She accepts him, and wants others to too. She talks about her concerns with her mother also. I think this is an excellent book to introduce children to the idea of accepting everyone and treating everyone the same.

This is a simple book about a girl named Kate who has questions about a boy named Timmy. She doesn't understand why he acts differently and looks differently, so she asks her mom all sorts of questions. Her mother explains that Timmy is different, but that he is also a lot alike Kate. They play
Show More
basketball together and Kate realizes that Timmy is fun to be around. There is mentions of God in this book, talking about God making everyone special in their own way. It's an okay book that has a good message, but some of the language used is a little iffy, and I don't like the emphasis they put on Kate being "scared" of Timmy.
