In this book a variety of vegetables are planted from seeds or sprouts and "grow" on the pages. Very simplistic pictures show children the plants starting with seeds, going to sprouts, and finally becoming vegetables. At the back of the book is a recipe for vegetable soup.

Good book for younger children. After reading the book the students could even do an activity about growing their own vegatable or even just a small plant.

This book is about growing and making vegetable soup. Great for grades k-3. We could use construction paper to make vegetables and then make our own soup.

This would be a great book for younger children. The pictures dipicted in it have their names right underneath them. It is about a family growing vegetables to make vegetable soup. They go through all of the step, with the tools and necessities named in every picture. This could be used for a unit

on gardening.

My 18 month old was fascinated by this book! She is two and a half now and still loves to read it. The text is simple, but definitely draws children in. I like how the illustrations are a little abstract. It's a great book to read to your small child right before spring--it got us excited to plant

our garden.

This is a great beginner book for young children. Ehlert gives a great story line about a little child who is going to make vegetable soup with his / her father. The book goes on to talk about the process of growing vegetables and how they start off as little seeds and grow up to be large. Finally,

Great to show children through pictures what different plants and vegetables grow in a garden.

This book shows children the importance and responsibility of caring for and nurturing living things. This book also tells of the rewards involved at the end of caring for those living things.

This book to me was the epitome of a children's picture book. I was very impressed with the use of page

space and illustrations. The pages were in full bright color and each picture of a vegetable was clearly labeled as to what it was. The author showed intelligence by showing which vegetables grew above ground and which grew under. Each page was a different, bright color and the vegetables were also bright colors.

I think I would use this in my class to show how working as a group or family to care for things gives a reward in the end which in this story was to make a vegetable soup and eat it! I would use the variety of vegetables presented to teach them how each one is different and whether it grows under or above ground. I would also use this story to engage students to actively participate in discussions of what they eat or what is grown in their gardens for example.

various vegetables. Finally, the vegetables are ready to be cooked and at the end the vegetable soup is cooked.
This is a wonderful picture book that every teacher will enjoy reading to his/her class. This enjoyable, yet very informational picture book would be especially great to read when talking about plants. It could also be used to teach students new terms related to planting and cooking. Each colorful page has labeled pictures to help children visualize the story. There's also a recipe for vegetable soup in the back so that students can truly experience what they read about.

The illustrations in this book are bright and vibrant and make you hungry for the veggies is it talking about! I see reading this book in a younger elementary classroom, where they can learn the names of different foods and then talk about their favorites.

Father and son plant the seeds of all different vegetables. They give the seeds water, sun, and time to make them turn into plants. They watch over the plants until the vegetables are ready to be picked. They take the vegetables home to wash and cook for vegetable soup.

I like the simple nature of this book. It describes the process of growing vegetable and how to combine them into a delicious and healthy soup. It teaches children what the various types of vegetable are, which hopefully would make them want to try them for themselves. I am all for any type of book

that promotes healthy eating choices for children! The only thing I didn't like about this book was the choice of such bright colors in the illustrations, some were almost blindingly bright. But then many kids might really like this aspect of it.

Growing Vegetable Soup, is exactly what you would imagine it to be. This is a great introduction to the names of tools, seeds, and plants in a typical garden, as well as the process of planting and harvesting. Not only does it give the step by step process for growing a garden, but it also teaches

Caldecott Artist Lois Ehlert uses her bold, distinctive collage art to demonstrate the many steps that go into preparing vegetable soup — literally from the ground up. The first step is planting, one of the many adventures which the loving father and child in this story share. Next they water,

take care, and watch: what joy to see bean seeds become beans, and tomato plants tomatoes! This simple introduction to a natural process will fascinate young readers and encourage them to grow their own gardens — and the hungry will be glad to find the soup recipe included.
Read aloud because of the sequencing of the book makes it easy for students to use prediction.

A child and his/her father grow the ingredients for vegetable soup. The child describes each step, and everything in the book is labeled, like tools and plants.

The book would be a great way to begin a class garden and possibly a great pairing with "Seedfolks" by Paul Fleischman.

Intensely colored graphics that take you through all the steps to make vegetable soup. Could be a great flannel board story.
