"Cesar Chavez: Fighter in the Fields" is a biography that follows the life of Chavez. Chavez was a migrant worker that was able to form the first union for farm workers and get better wages for them. It chronicles his life from the age of 10 until his death. This book is nicely written. It has

words in bold print, that may be new to students, and defines them at the bottom of the page on which they are used. This would be a good book to use with students to introduce migrant workers, unions, or non-violent ways to create change.

I found that Cesar Chavez: Fighter in the Fields to be a great story of how one individual can help thousands of others by taking a stand against big organizations. Chavez felt that field workers should be provided with proper wages, suitable living situations, and the right to form unions. Many

times throughout Cesar's life, he felt it necessary to strike, fast, or march in order for his message of equal workers' rights. Chavez was influential in grape and lettuce workers gaining equal pay and decent working conditions in California. He fasted twice and marched 340 miles throughout his lifetime in order to gain attention by the media in the name of union workers. I would recommend this book to those students learning about equal rights for workers. It had a lot of great information along with pictures to illustrate the life of Cesar Chavez.
