Book Gobblers Zine is inspired by ‘Queer Between the Covers’ exhibition, Senate House Library June 2018 and the archives of Gays the Word Bookshop in nearby Marchant Street.
Drawing on original archive material from Gays the Word, the zine recounts the raid by Customs and Excise Officers in 1984 and the solidarity campaign that helped win victory for freedom of expression.
Gay's the Word bookshop was raided by Customs and Excise officers 10th April 1984. They confiscated all of the books that had been imported - nearly a third of the total book stock. Charges of 'conspiracy to import indecent or obscene material' were brought against the bookshop. The books identified as so called obscene by officials included the work of Jean-Paul Stre and Oscar WIlde. Many of the books could be found on the shelves at the nearby Senate House Library, within 5 days of the raid the bookshop launched a defence campaign. -- Taken from inside cover
