Description

The classic tales in this lavishly illustrated collection have enchanted generations of readers. Here, among others, is the fair Snow White, Rapunzel with her golden tresses, and the princess so delicate that even just a small pea hidden under 20 mattresses keeps her awake at night. The stories are paired with magnificent artwork by some of the most renowned children's book illustrators of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. From Arthur Rackham to Millicent Sowerby to Kay Nielsen, each brought a unique artistic vision to these timeless tales. This beautifully designed edition is equally at home on a child's bedside table as it is on a collector's bookshelf.

Eight classic princess tales in (one of) their original written versions (Andersen, Perrault, etc). Illustrated with actual works of art with an index in the back with credits for them. Well bound and attractive edition.

I like this book for multiple reasons. One reason I like this book if for the language and writing. The language used within this text is very appropriate for the time periods each story takes place. For example in Cinderella a sentence reads “The stepsisters gave themselves much loftier airs

than before; and it seemed as if they would never cease discussing how they should be dressed". Although the language is more difficult to interpret, I feel this make the writing more engaging. Another reason I enjoyed this book was for its illustrations. Each story is equipped with its own illustrations to help bring the writing to life. I especially like the incorporation of color throughout the text. For example, on one page, the illustration will be splashing with color and then the next is a much simpler black and white image. Overall, I believe the main goal of this text is to help give the readers a different version then the more popular Disney rendition of these eight classic fairytales.
