personal response: The color in this book is fantastic. The language is as laid back as the illustrations. I don't speak spanish so half the book is useless to me, but it is fun to pick out what I remember from the 4 years i took spanish in highschool and middle school.

An inviting story of what shaped Gabriela Mistral. Much like the picture book of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, we learn about Gabriela's grant imagination and the experiences and people who influenced her life.
Colorful illustrations that grab the reader.

Use to teach the background of an author before

delving into her work. Also can be used to teach Spanish-speaking English language learners since the story is both in English and Spanish.

The book My Name is Gabriela: Me Llamo Gabriela tells the story of Gabriela Mistral, who won the 1945 Nobel Peace Prize for Literature. As a little girl, Gabriela dreams of faraway places and magical animals. She yearns to write and tell the stories that are both near and far from her home in

Chile’. Gabriela writes poems and stories and grows up to become la maestra’—a teacher. She traveled to many places, writing and telling stories and poems. Gabriela told many different stories and gained worldwide respect for her accomplishment as the first Latin American writer to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

The illustrations are beautifully done, with depictions of things in Gabriela’s imagination and the real places she visited. The illustration of Gabriela shows the cinnamon brown skin familiar to most Latino/a people. The clothing of Gabriela and the other children represent common clothes that most people would wear, but the flowers and bright colors create a distinct Hispanic feel to the dress. In addition to the clothing, the accessories reflect a positive expression of Hispanic culture. Hair flowers, sombreros, soccer ball, music notes, parrots, and guitars all appear in the illustrations, providing additional clues for Gabriela’s Latina heritage.

A story about the first Nobel Prize winning "Latina" Latin women in the world. Gabriela Mistral was not her actual name she chose this name. She always loved words, she taught herself to read and write, and at the age of 15 she became an elementary school teacher. She began writing poems at a young

age- and she traveled all over the world to improve schools. In 1945, she won the Nobel Prize for literature. She always loved to travel.

Illustrations are a bit awkward, in my personal opinion, especially the outsize heads, a choice I dislike. Otherwise, a lovely book that could inspire all of us to find joy in words, and in travels & peoples, and perhaps to become a writer or poet ourselves. I'd never heard of Mistral before, but
