At first blush this is just a cheap children's paperback. However, the illustrations are delightful, the organization is helpful, and there are 24 (!!) pages of valuable addendum. I learned that Pecos Bill, Paul Bunyan, and other characters are fakelore" (a word credited to scholar Richard M. Dorson), created by known authors, often for purposes of advertising, rather than true folklore, as they "do not arise out of human needs and experience.""
