Julia Cameron was raised in India and France at a time when women were groomed for marriage and the only career paths that might have been open to them were as a governess or nurse. She followed that path to a point, marrying at 22 and raising six children. She hobnobbed with a literate crowd: Thackeray, Lewis Carroll, Tennyson. During a period when her husband was travelling and Margaret missed him terribly, her son-in-law gae her a camera and darkroom kit one Christmas.
