PreS-Gr 1 -- A simple, imaginative tale of how the first domestication of a wild animal may have occurred. Kip, a cave boy living at the end of the Ice Age, is followed on his journey home by a Paleowolf, who, smelling the boy's roasted Woolly Rhino bones, begs for a treat. ... The book's glorious

watercolor illustrations will attract young prehistory enthusiasts.... This is another of Brett's lavish offerings, intricately designed and filled with eye-catching detail. However, it is a fabricated story... Children familiar with the ever-growing body of factual material on this period may accept it as the truth, despite its accompanying notes.

This book is historical fiction, set during the caveman times. It is all about a little boys journey to becoming a friend with a wolf who eventually becomes a "dog". I would use this for the primary grades when talking about prehistoric times, and living with pets. This book has a great example of

This a book that tells all about friendship. Most children can relate to this book because they view their pets as their best friend also. The relationship between Kip and Paleowolf is one the children will relate too and learn from.

A great book for children set in prehistoric times. I think children would be very interested in this story about a young cave boy tamed a wolf and it became the first dog. Great to read when teaching about the Ice Age and pre historic time.

The drawings are creative as always.

Personal reflection: Great story of a cave boy during the Ice Age, and how he became friends with a Wolf that became his friend and pet.
Class Extension:
1.The teacher can have the students draw a picture of a wolf and color it, and give it a name.
2.The teacher can have the students write a story about their pet if they have one. Those students that do not have a pet write a story of the type of pet they would like and what they would name it and also have them draw a picture of it.

Cute book about a cave boy and his journey home. He meets a wolf that wants some of the boys food, but large animals keep breaking up their conversation. At the end of the book the boy and the dog make a deal, if the dog keeps him safe, then the boy will share his food.
