The Icebound Land (The Ranger's Apprentice Book 3)

The third in the series-- another gripping adventure with enough twists and turns to keep even unenthusiastic readers hooked. This is geared for upper elementary, but I've got high school students tearing through these since they've discovered them. A wonderful recommendation for reluctant readers.

This title in the series feels like the "Empire Strikes Back" for me - meaning horrible things happen to all of my favorite characters and I can only hope that resolution will come for them in the next book.

Another great book in the Ranger's Apprentice series. I just really like the characters in this book and the witty dialog. It helps that the story is also interesting and fast moving. This is definitely one of the good young adult books.

book marks something of a departure for the series. It's very much a placeholder volume; a lot of important things happen, but nothing is really resolved. Some readers might find this a bit underwhelming after the first two volumes, but I really enjoyed it. The characters continue to move forward in some surprising ways, and the story heads in a very different - and considerably darker - direction as a result. The first book led me to assume that the series would utilize your standard young-heroes-defeat-dark-lord plot. This volume proves that Flanagan is willing to do so much more with this story. I can't wait to see where it all leads.

I highly recommend this series, both to children and to adults with an interest in children's fantasy. It's got it all: action, excitement, surprising twists and turns and, most importantly, characters you can care about. And make sure you've got at least The Battle For Skandia, (Oakleaf Bearers in Australia in the UK), on hand; you'll want to dive right in as soon as you've finished this one.

This is a great book about a Rangers Apprentice named Will and a Princess named Evanlyn. They were captured by a group of Skandians, big Norse-like people, who have them doing manual labor ,in there hometown,Skandia, to keep it in order. whole Evanlyn is a house maid Will is somewhat of a farmer.

He soon realizes that Skandia is a very cold place. there is a bad drug that people give out there called Warmweed. by the title you can already tell what it does but what you dont know is that if you take it it becomes nearly impossible to become un-addicted. One of the Skandians, Jarl Erak, has become soft for the boy ans girl and he is trying to help them escape. Meanwhile Wills best friend Horace, a knight in training, and his Ranger teacher, Halt, are on there way to find Will and Evanlyn. After a couple of months of traveling, Horace and Halt ran into a couple of unexpected guests, other knights. Horace is able to take on all of them, or so he thought. The war lord in that part of the world has come to hear of Horaces skills and wants to chalenge him but unfortunatly haraces last battle had injured him. Evelyn have been kidnapped by the Skandians and are at sea on the way back to the Skandians' homeland. Will they survive their kidnapping and be safely returned home? Halt is determined to go find Will, but is needed elsewhere in the kingdom. Halt will try to force the King's hand and ensure that he is able to go after Will. Will Halt and Horace be able to save Will and Evelyn?

I liked this book somewhat better than the first and second books in the series. Much of the story is spent with Will and Evelyn and they are both great characters and really grow throughout this book. These poor two characters face many trials and tribulations as they are forced to serve as slaves to the Skandians. The remainder of the story is told from Halt and Horace's point of view; Halt still has his biting sense of humor and Horace is much more likable than in previous books.

The plot is fairly predictable, there isn't anything here that hasn't been done before. The story is well written and engaging. There is a lot of humor throughout which makes that story fun to read. This book ends on another cliffhanger, so you may want to buy Book 4, The Battle for Skandia, ahead of time.

Overall this was a solid addition to the series. The story is engaging and the characters likable. The plot is well done, but predictable and nothing new. The humor throughout sets this apart from other middle grade fantasy and makes this book a fun read. This book does end on another horrible cliffhanger so be ready for that. I am looking forward to how things pan out in The Battle for Skandia. If you like this series I would recommend The Emerald Atlas by John Stephens and A World Without Heroes by Brandon Mull.

So far the series has been a mixed bag for me. The stories are fast-paced and generally exciting. They're excellent when I need a quick, mindless read. Unfortunately, the descriptions of places and characters have all the subtlety of a two-by-four, and I had huge issues with the plot of this book. *here's where the spoilers start* Will is a mindless druggie for nearly half the book. I grant you I don't know a ton about addictive substances, but we see him have have one try of "warmweed" and the next thing we know he's completely addicted. I couldn't quite buy that someone as smart as Will wouldn't have figured out that he'd been tricked into taking a narcotic and steer clear. I give you that the drug in this world could have been particularly strong; apparently, it was since when Will is being weened off the drug, he is still in a daze two weeks after his last fix. Really? Finally, there just wasn't the same sense of urgency in reading this book, because the plot has no definite beginning or end, but is clearly in the middle of a series.

The book jumps right in the where the last one in the series left, and it never loses momentum. It continues with the non-stop action and suspenseful scenes, leaving readers wondering from page to page what actually is going to happen next due to the main characters facing danger at every turn.
