This is a realistic fiction book. The book is about a little boy who goes to visit his nana in the city, but is scared of the city. He thinks the city is loud, busy, and filled with scary things. Once his grandma shows him around the city and how cool and amazing the things in it are, he is no

longer scared. He loves the city!

I really liked this book. The first reason I liked the book was because of the emotion it showed from the little boy. The little boy’s emotion was worry. He was worried about his grandmother living in the city. For example, when he said, “The city is filled with scary things. It is no place for
Show More
nana to live” he was indicating that he didn’t think that the city was safe for his nana to live in. Another example of his worry for his grandmother was when he said, “Nana, aren’t you afraid in the city? It is busy, loud, and filled with scary things.” Here he asks his grandmother if she is afraid of the city like he is. The second reason I liked the book was because it reminded me of how I felt about the city. For example, in the book the little boy says, “I love my nana, but I don’t love the city.” I do not love the city at all so when the little boy said that it immediately took me to my memory of the city. Another example of how I feel about the city is when the little boy said, “The city is busy.” Whenever I go to the city it is filled with people almost running me over. The big message of the book was that it is okay to be worried about someone and expressing your concern is a great way to clear up any concerns you have for someone. In the book the little boy shows his concern for his grandmother when he says, “Nana aren’t you afraid in the city? It is busy, loud, and filled with scary things.” Nana cleared up his concern by saying, “Tomorrow…I will show you how wonderful the city is.”

give a pretzel to a homeless man and he smiles at them, and the city lights up at night. The little boy is delighted to discover that "The city is busy, the city is loud, and it is the absolute perfect place for a nana to live."

A poor little boy is worried about his nana living in the city. This ficton novel is very realistic and sweet about the little boy caring so much about his nana. The loud, busy city is filled with many scary things which is not place for his nana to be. By letting the boy become comfortable and

okay with the fact of her living in the city is by showing him around the city. He was amazed by the cool and amazing things that were in the city. As he gets to know the city, color explodes across the urban landscape and people come into focus.

A little boy visits his grandmother that lives in the city. The boy does not believe that the city is a place for his Nana, it is too loud, busy, and scary. The next day, the grandmother gives the boy a cape to wear as they tour the city. The boy is feeling brave and he now loves the things he
Show More
hated about the city. He is excited about visiting Nana in the city again. The book is an adorable depiction of a grandmother and her grandchild, it made me think about the times that I spent with my grandparents. The book could be used to help children overcome fears or it could be a feel-good book to share.

This is an excellent book to read because it captures the reality of certain aspects of life. When one reads this book, they will be able to understand that not everything in life is how they see it. When a boy spends the day with his Nana in her city, he suddenly becomes frightened from the
Show More
mysterious noises and what not happening around him. He is soon overcoming this fear when his grandmother makes him a cape. This cape is a symbol of his bravery. I would read this book to a group of pre- kindergarten to first graders because I feel as though they will be open to a time when they may have been afraid of something. this book is an excellent representation of how one can overcome their fears.

I think this is a very sweet story with excellent illustrations and it shows how simple things (like a cape) can make a huge difference for a kid.

I would say that this is a diverse book, because it shows that the elderly can be perfectly capable and fun. This one about a little boy visiting his Nana living in a big city. He is initially scared and apprehensive about the busy city filled with strange noises and sights, but after his Nana
Show More
makes him a special cape, he becomes very brave! Castillo deservedly wins the Caldecott Medal for this book.

A boy goes to visit his grandmother in the city. He doesn't like it at first because it is scary and noisy, but his grandmother shows him cities are not scary. The illustrations in this book are wonderful, and I'm really glad Nana has cats. Young children should love it!

I liked this book for two reasons. The first reason is because of the illustrations. The illustration in this story is very vibrant and easy to follow along with the story. The second reason I liked this book because of the two perspectives of the characters. The boy finds the city to be “ busy,
Show More
loud, and filled with scary things.” But his Nana found the city “the perfect place to live”. The overall message of this story is that the city may be scary for some people because they are not used, but if you live there it’s a good place to live since there are so many activities.

The illustrations are beautiful and very colorful, and the writing is very simple, yet descriptive. This would be an excellent story for a very young student to practice reading with. They might also really relate to the idea of being frightened in a new place, so perhaps this would be an excellent

book to read on the first day of class.

In this book,a young boy visits his grandma in the city. At first he is very scared of the city and doesn't want his grandma to live there. Later the grandma shows him a good time in the city and the boy changes his mind.

The theme of this book is to give something new a try. Life can offer a lot
Show More
of amazing things so it is important that you keep an open mind. Children should learn this concept at a young age so this is a good book to share. I really like how the illustrations were dark and grey when the boy was scared, and turned bright and colorful when the boy wasn't scared anymore.

A young boy loves his Nana but dislikes her urban home in this beautiful and endearing picture-book from author/artist Lauren Castillo. He finds the city busy and loud, and thinks that it is full of scary things. His Nana assures him that the city is wonderful: bustling and booming, and full of
Show More
wonderful things, and on his visit to her, she shows him just what she means.

Awarded a Caldecott Honor in 2015, Nana in the City is a heartwarming tale that invites the young reader/listener to consider different perspectives, when pondering a given issue. The young boy-narrator comes to visit his Nana with a certain mindset, and everything he sees and hears, from the graffiti on the walls to the roar of the subway, seems to confirm his view that the city is no place for a Nana to live. But his wise grandmother, after outfitting him with a red cape to give him courage, shows him how the very things that cause him to dislike the city, also make it wonderful. She shows him a busy Central Park, she lets him listen to street musicians - in short, she shows him that the city is indeed a place for a Nana to live, and for him to visit. The watercolor artwork here is perfectly in tune with the story, using darker, more overwhelming shades - charcoal gray in the subway, for instance - when the boy is frightened; more open, white backgrounds - as when he is trying on the red cape - when he feels more secure; and warmer, brighter tones - the yellow of the leaves in the park - when he is discovering a new perspective. Castillo blends text and image here perfectly, making the marriage of the two seem effortless and natural. I enjoyed the story, thought the artwork was lovely, and appreciated the New York setting. In sum: Nana In the City is a picture-book that I highly recommend!

The loud, wild city may not be the best place for a Nana to live. With the help of a red superhero cape, Nana and her grandson explore the city and see that the things that make it scary may also be what make it great.

This book is about a boy who goes to visit his Grandmother in a new city--his Grandma shows him that new things aren't scary by taking him around town with his red cape. This book is a good example of contemporary realistic fiction because grandparents may move to new towns or cities and kids may

be nervous or uneasy about the new situation.
