I started cooking using this book and The Joy of Cooking. Looking back, I think that's a good combination for an absolute beginner in the kitchen (which I was).

Although the recipes sometimes call for a number of ingredients, the steps in the recipes are generally very easy and straightforward. A

good example is the Lentil Chili - lots of ingredients, but once all the vegetables are chopped and ready to go, you just dump them into the pot and add the other spices and liquids as you go.
