Review:
I love all the books done by Seymour Simon for Smithsonian collection of nature books. This is a great book that started great talks in my K-2 class and ended with us under the desks doing an earthquake drill (which we're required to do anyway). The kids walked away from the experience feeling empowered not scared.

This is an informational book about Earthquakes, how they are formed and when and where they happen. It has information on different earthquakes in many parts of the world and at various times in history.

This is a book which reminded me of the ones I used to read in school, about different

subjects. It was clear and went directly to the core of the subject.

This book would be very good for introducing subjects like earthquakes to the younger grades. Several books like this would be great for doing reports on earthquakes.

This is a fair introductory book to earthquakes. It gives information on what causes earthquakes, why earthquakes take place where they do, and some of the effects of past earthquakes. Photographs are used to support the information and a glossary of terms, a subject index, and a short list of

extension sources are given.

Some of the drawbacks to this book are that there is no table of contents or subjects headings on the pages. Because it is a survey book, it does not go into any real detail about any aspect of earthquakes. Appropriate for ages 5 to 9.

Seymour Simon is at it again with another great non-fiction science book that is just jam-packed with information on earthquakes. It tells of past earthquakes, explains what is going on physically with the earth that causes an earthquake, and where danger zones are. Then it goes into detail about

how to measure and compare the sizes of earthquakes and which scales have been used by scientists globally. Last it tells students what do in the case of an earthquake, it just doesn't get any better than this when you want a gripping and informational book for you class.

This book is about earthquakes and it tells about various major earthquakes that have happened around the world, why they happen, where they are most likely to happen, and how scientists can measure them. This is a good informational book to inform children about the different types of earthquakes

and how to be prepared for when it does occur. I am not sure how to use this for a lesson plan other than reading it to the class on earth day or after a earthquake occurs so they can learn better as to what they witnessed themselves. The theme is science, environment, earthquakes.
