This is the third in the Last Firehawk series but could be picked up with this installment in the series since there is an introduction that explains what has happened in the previous two books. A two page spread with a map of Perodia follows the introduction. See also the review for Crystal

A small owl called Tag, a squirrel named Skyla, and Blaze the last firehawk are searching for the next piece of the ember stone. So is their enemy Thorn, a vulture, who controls The Shadow which is a dark magic. He is interested in destroying the island of Perodia with the help of his orange eyed spies. The three friends will have to cross a tornado filled dessert to get to the whispering oak and the stone. A fantastical adventure for animal loving readers.
This is a branches scholastic book, which tends to be larger typeface, shorter chapters, lots of illustrations. An excellent choice for kids transitioning to chapter books.
