I was drawn to this because I love crystals and the like. This looked like a coffee table book that would fit in well with the aesthetic of my vintage, hipster-y Portland living room. I was also drawn to it because many of my students this year are into gems, with “gemologist” being a common

word I hear on the playground.

The book is a “visual encyclopedia” so there is not a lot of text beyond captions, technical descriptions, and fun facts. The pages have gigantic, full-color photos of rocks, gems, fossils, minerals, shells, and more. The end of the book featured the “treasures”- like an ancient Viking hoard! - which I know several boys in my class would love looking at.
