I have not read the other books in the Trylle Trilogy. I was introduced to this author by reading her Watersong trilogy. Which I just fell in love with. So coming into this book I knew nothing of the world or the characters that inhibited it. Luckily because this is book one in a new spin off from
Show More
the Trylle series, this book was new and you did not have to read the prior ones to get it. I did like the author's take on "Trolls". She portrayed them as mysterious, human like people and not the ones I have known from the fairy tale stories of the tall, ugly, mean creatures.

I liked the world more then I did the characters in the story. However I still did like Bryn. She is a strong female heroine. She moved to the beat of her own drum. Not sure about the romance at this point but will have to see as the story progresses. My biggest complaint was that it did not seem like there was much powers that Kanin or Trolls had. Bryn talked about powers but I did not really see anything other than Bryn is a skilled tracker and can fight. Plus, there was not a lot of action in the beginning. Most of it was in the last third of the book.

This first book in a new series by Amanda Hocking returns to the world of the Trylle. Bryn Aven is a tracker, which means she gets changelings from their host families and returns them to her tribe, the Kanin; as a half-Kanin, half-Skojare, she's had to work hard for her job and still isn't
Show More
accepted by an elitist society. Four years ago, her father was attacked by Konstantin Black, a member of an elite guard to which Bryn herself aspires. Konstantin ran, and now it appears that he's tracking the same changelings that Bryn and her fellow trackers are after. Should she take revenge, or is something bigger going on?

Though some of the characters from the Trylle trilogy return, it is not necessary to have read those books before Frostfire. I really enjoyed seeing more of the complex troll world, especially the other tribes and the way they operated. I sometimes became a little annoyed with Bryn, but the ending made me want to continue seeing how the stories unfolds.

Bryn Aven is a tracker, her job is to venture outside the walls of the Kanin kingdom, infiltrate the lives of the young trolls who they left to be raised by humans and bring them (and their fortunes) back home.

While on a routine mission Bryn comes face to face with the man who tried- and failed-
Show More
to kill her and her father several years ago.

Konstantin hasn't been seen in years and although Bryn has the opportunity to kill him and rid herself of the guilt she's been carrying around she lets him live.

It doesn't take long for Bryn to regret her decision though because it seems like seeing Konstantin near her changeling wasn't a coincidence.

Suddenling all the changelings are in danger and Bryn must set aside her hate for Konstantin and her unknown feelings for her boss, Ridley and figure out a way to protect her people.

I was SO excited when Amanda Hocking announced she was writing another book set in the same world as her Trylle series, I marked the release date on my calender and was thrilled when I went out the weekend before it was suppose to go on sale and found it at my local book store.

Then of course life got in the way and other books came out and I waited almost 4 months to read it...

And when I finally did I was so disappointed...

I felt like it just dragged. The story started off really slow and never really picked up.

I wasn't a huge fan of the characters and even the underlining mystery of Konstantin wasn't enough to keep my attention.

I read 3 other books while trying to finish this and I kept putting it down and hoping that when I picked it back up again it would be better but that never happened.

There was a little 'Easter Egg' (is that what they are calling it?) for fans of the Trylle series, you get to see where a certain character ended up and how their life turned out but even that didn't thrill me like it should have.

The only thing I did enjoy throughout the book were the moments between Bryn and Ridley but they were so few and far between that it didn't make up for the lack of action or suspense.

Before I read this I was ecstatic about the fact that all three books in this series are being released within the year but now I'm thinking I won't even be picking them up...

I still HIGHLY recommend Hocking's Trylle series but this one just missed the mark for me.

Until next time,
Ginge

(Please note that I received this book for review through Firstreads. However, it didn't effect my thoughts in any way, this is a 100% honest review.)

Oh what fun! I absolutely loved returning to Amanda Hocking's world of trolls, royalty, and trackers! I would whole heartedly recommend this book to
Show More
almost anyone. There is humor, romance, and action. I can already tell the Kanin Chronicles will be an amazing series.

First, we have our heroine. Bryn. I think I like her even more than I liked Wendy from the Trylle trilogy! She is a hard working tracker that stands out because of blonde hair, fair skin, and eyes, unlike the rest of the Kanin, that mark her a a half-breed. She is half Skojare, making her an outcast.

As always, Amanda Hocking ha of provided us with two love interests. Love triangles aren't really my thing, but Amanda Hocking does it so well. I lapped it up! Currently, I really like Ridley. But, I feel like I could really grow to like Konstantin once I understand his background, his reasons for his actions, and just get to know him better! (Plus, I love his name.) Another character I liked was Linus, a changeling Bryn saved from Konstantin. He was really sweet and I hope he has parts in the upcoming sequels!

Also, there was all the royal intrigue and stuff. I love reading about riches and dances. It's so fun! Speaking of royalty, I really didn't like the king, and I am really intrigued by the queen. The king seems pretty stuck up to me, and it was implied that the queen was lying about loving her husband! What fun!

For those wondering, it is not necessary to read the Trylle trilogy first, but I would highly recommend doing so. There are a few cameos of characters from the trilogy, and the books would give you a deeper understanding of the world! Plus, it is just interesting to reading from both Wendy and Bryn's view points, since one is the equivalent of a princess and the other is a tracker and a "peasant".

Overall, I can't wait for the next book in the series. I can always count on Hocking for an entertaining, engaging read full of vibrant characters, swoony love interests, amazing settings and ideas, and fighting/action!

I really enjoyed the world that Hocking built. Her characters were complex and the story, engaging.

Why did I give in and read this? It was as typical YA fluff as I thought it would be and the relationships were so unrealistic. Although I do admit I did read the goodreads summaries for the next two books out of curiosity. However I will not read them.

I put this book on my to-read list ages ago and then promptly forgot about it. I'm not certain what I had expected, but this fast-paced novel with an original take on troll kingdoms in a frosty northern wilderness was not it. The action begins early, with an assassination attempt in the prologue,
Show More
and keeps going in quick succession, which held my interest better than many other fantasy novels I've encountered. This book is part of a series, and based on the ending, I'm certainly adding the next book to my to-read pile.

Bryn Aven has never truly fit in. A member of the Kanin, the most powerful of the troll tribes, her half-blood status has always been an impediment, but not one that she's allowed to stand in her way. She's become a successful tracker, being among those who track down changelings--the children of
Show More
Kanin nobility who are slipped into human society to be adopted by rich families until they reach adulthood--and bringing them home when the time comes. The identities and locations of Kanin changelings are a closely guarded secret, which makes it troubling when evidence surfaces that someone may be targeting them and attempting to kidnap them before the trackers bring them home. It's even more troubling when Bryn learns that one of the men involved is an outlaw she used to adore and respect until he betrayed the crown, her family, and her heart...

I enjoyed my time getting lost in this rich fantasy world. Amanda Hocking has created a unique story with several twists that will keep readers engaged and guessing about the truth behind the mysterious behavior. The first book in a series, obviously this one doesn't resolve everything, but it is a great set up for what I'm hoping will be a good series. The second book is out now, and the third is on it's way; I'm looking forward to continuing Bryn's journey.
