This is one of our favorite books.
The chaos caused by the monsters (more sensitive kids might get upset, I suppose, but my nieces don't) is done in a funny way, and the fact that the BIRTHDAY MONSTER CLEANING CREW! fixes everything at the end makes it all better.
Very catchy text, really funny

A bit less basic than some of the simpler board books. Just as fun to read. Has parts worth "shouting" aloud.

Easy to read rhyme, better for an older child, not sure why it's a board book.

I feel like all I do is review Sandra Boynton books lately. This is another new one that we bought for our daughter's birthday, and at first I didn't like it as much as some of our favorites. The text isn't as smooth, it doesn't roll off my tongue like the writing in Snuggle Puppy or Pajama Time.

The first time I read it I was disappointed. After my daughter started asking for the monster book at bedtime, my feelings changed. I had to get a few good readings and learn where to embellish with sound effects and songs, and now it's a much more fun read. I still can't compare the writing to some of her other stories, it's just not as lyrical; but it is a fun story, and my girl likes it, which is good enough for me. Show Less

Despite being a board book, it's got a plot! The monsters are a lot of fun, and my 1-year-old grandson just loves the book! (We did a bit of a monster theme for him...)
I love Boynton and have for decades now, and this is a really fun addition to her board books for the little ones!

The Birthday Monsters throw a chaotic and disastrous party for a dazed hippopotamus. Thank goodness for the twist ending setting things aright.
This particular book was a present for my daughter's very first birthday and has been revisited regularly over the last two decades.
