One of our favourite Boynton board books. The simple clear and cheerful drawings are great for toddlers. The rhythmic rhyming text is fun to read aloud, and older children can do the actions to the barn dance. We read this so often we had it memorized, and we got the kids to dance to it. A winner!

Stomp your feet! Clap your hands! Everybody ready for a barnyard dance! This is just great read-aloud fun and was one of my youngest son's first "favorite" books - even when he was too young for it, he liked to hold it and look at it. Also, if you're familiar with the Turkey from "Red Hat, Green

Hat" - my two-year-old likes to point him out in this book and say "Oops!"

This book was fully of silly, fun sounds. It was easy to read and flowed off the lips. My daughter wanted me to read it over and over again, and it was such a quick book to read that I obliged her. While it probably won't appeal to older children, ti's certainly great for younger children,

particularly those who are still learning songs.

This one is great for babies and toddlers, and even slightly older kids can get into it. It's one of the ones I really wish existed as a non-board book!

The illustrations are cute, the text is simple and catchy - what more do you want?

FUN to read. Sing-songy and rhythmic like all Boynton books. Evie rocks back-forth on the sound of the opening page.

I read this and other Sandra Boynton books to my children all the time! They are so fun; we dance, we rap, we sing them to the kids. I also always give these as baby gifts!

This is a delightful board book in which the farm animals gather for a dance, composed in the rhythmic nature of a square dance. It is sure to amuse and entertain two year-olds to the point of giddiness.

How many times have I read this? Hmmmm... Uncountable. I wish Boynton would do a rhythmic reading of this book, rather than the singing one. We read it with all the animal sounds too, and it's so much fun!

fun "sing-song" book about farm animals. has a do-si-do type of song to the writing. Kids will love the song and want to sing and dance to the story.

Boynton, S. (1993). Barnyard dance! New York: Workman Publishing.
Age: 1 to 3 years old
It is party time at the farm. The animals come together to take part in the barnyard dance. From the chickens to the pigs, from the horses to the sheep, the animals get together to follow the steps called by a

violinist cow. It is square dance animal style, and everyone is having a good time.
Barnyard dance! has the rhythm of square dancing with the added charm that all participants are cuddly farm creatures. When read aloud, the text sounds like a square dance caller addressing his audience. Rhymes such as “With a BAA and a MOO and a COCKADOODLEDOO / everybody promenade two by two!” remind us that this is a very special dance. The text works with the whacky and fun illustrations describing what happens in each drawing. This is a book to be read aloud many, many times.

Get ready for a foot-stomping good time. This board book captures the thumping pace of a square dance, with moves suited to the barnyard animals that populate the story. Time to skitter with mice, or trot with the turkeys. How about leaping like a frog? My girls absolutely adore this book. It helps
Show More
that my husband and I read it while we act out all the moves with them. As is true of other Boynton books, the text has a perfect read aloud rhythm, the illustrations are cute and funny, and the story is a joy to read. Bed time is a lot more fun when we include this book in our routine.

Farm animals participate in square dancing. I like the storyline of farm animals gathering together to square dance.

Cartoon farm animals that are wacky enough to make you laugh out loud and rhymes clever enough to sustain those nearly infinite re-readings.

This is a great lesson for verbs and how they are used in a rhythmic rhyming way.

Barnyard Dance is a rhyming book and a sing along. It is about barn animals just having a good old time with each other. The author finds animals that rhyme with each other for example, frog and dog.I would using the book for a rhyming activty, espcially if we were learning about animals. I think
Show More
the kids would really like this because it is a sing along.

Sandra Bounton's Barn Yard Dance, is a great tale about barnyard animals performing a line dance. The moves are shouted along the pages while the illustrations are full of dancing animals, some playing instruments. The playful rhyming words can practically be sung by the child as they read along.
This a great read aloud for little ones, and may even get them moving if they choose to dance along as the moves are detailed for you. Many of the illustrations include several of the same animal which could be used as a counting tool for young ones as well. Overall this is a fun whimsical read for preschoolers and would make a fun addition to a preschool classroom.

My son absolutely loves this book. "Stomp your feet! Clap your hands! Everybody ready for a BARNYARD DANCE!”

This was a cute little book about barnyard animals having a dance party. The rhyming verses give the book a sing-song feel. There are also several animals named, which is helpful for babies learning their animals. Parts of the book have verses where animal sounds are made. This would be a good book
Show More
for a baby/toddler that likes to join in. Parents could also get baby excited by mimicking some of the motions mentioned in the book, such as clapping and stomping feet. This board book would be an excellent choice for 1-2 year olds.

My first memory of this book was when I had my 2 year old in baby ballet. The teacher read this book and the tiny bunheaded toddlers payed rapt attention. Following the story they each got to preform an interpretive dance of one of the barnyard animals. This book works for more than just tiny
Show More
ballerinas. It has appeal to toddlers of all sorts. It leads in very well to active play after a story, and the sturdy board format will hold up to even the tiniest of readers/listeners.
