Ghosts tells the story of an impossibly skilled motley crew of ex-spies and assassins working secretly for a billionaire who spend their time taking out bad guys that the state operators (CIA, MI5, MI6, etc.) either cannot or will not tackle. Here they are up against the ‘Madrigal’, a

super-hacker capable of disrupting electrical systems anywhere in the world.

The book reads like the novelisation of a particularly poor episode of MacGyver (and not the good MacGyver, but the weak remake). The author is a successful scriptwriter and the emphasis on spectacle and driving narrative through action shows here. Characterisation is not so much poor as mostly missing, playing second fiddle to what is happening on the ground.

Is this a good read? If you are on a plane or at the beach and need something to pass the time, then this will suffice.
