activity, and it is, therefore, necessary that the community of individuals working in this area meet periodically to exchange views, discuss recent developments, sharpen understanding for future work, and re-kindle the spirit for the tasks that remain.

Many persons, too numerous to mention individually in this brief note, representing industry, the American Nuclear Society, the AIME, and the U.S. Government assisted in the many efforts necessary to create this conference. The success of their efforts are amply chronicled in these proceedings. Our invited speakers, Congressman Mike McCormack, Mr. George Hardigg, and Dr. G. W. Cunningham gave timely and informative talks, and their contributions have also been included herein.
