approximately 2000 reflecting heliostats which redirect solar insolation to a central receiver mounted on a tower. The energy collected by the receiver is used to produce superheated steam which is then used to generate electricity and/or charge storage. Performance of the plant will be studied during a five year test period scheduled to begin December 1981. The plant is being designed for a thirty year life. For the Pilot Plant, successful performance requires materials having not only the proper initial properties, but also having long-term stability in the presence of thermal, chemical, and mechanical environments. For purposes of this discussion materials concerns are categorized into four operating subsystems of the plant: collectors, receiver, storage, and electrical power generation. Show Less
