ABSTRACT:
The thermal performance of the molten salt thermal storage system located at the Central Receiver Test Facility (CRTF) was measured. The 7-MWht system is composed of a hot storage tank containing molten nitrate salt at a temperature of 1050 "F (566 "C) and a cold tank containing 550 OF

(288 "C) salt with associated valves and controls. The thermal performance of this system was evaluated and compared with the CESA-1 and Themis salt storage systems developed by the European solar community. Results of the comparison indicate that the performance of the three salt storage systems is similar. Test data were also used to validate a simulation model of the CRTF system and a proposed commercial-scale system (1200 MWht). The simulation model of the 1200-MWht system predicted an annual system efficiency of greater than 98%. The simulation also predicted that a relatively small amount of parasitic energy would be required to prevent the salt from freezing during a typical operating year.
