types of both flat plate and concentrating collectors in various orientations. A project to determine the geographic distributions Of these availabilities by month on mean daily basis is in progress. The data base consists of hourly total-horizontal readings for 26 US locations for the years 1958-1962. This paper presents maps and tables showing the availability of direct-normal radiation by month for the US. The results indicate that there is more direct solar energy than has been generally believed; direct-normal radiation availability generally exceeds total-horizontal availability by about 60% in the winter. Availabilities to other surfaces will be described in the final report to be published at the conclusion of this project. Show Less
