coal, by achieving more optimal utilization. The submission is for a research program which extends existing work of the Energy Conversion group in the Department of Engineering Physics and which may conveniently be subdivided into three interrelated parts: Underground storage of substitute natural gas/hydrogen derived from coal, investigation of methods for producing liquid fuels with optimum coal utilization by employing coal/solar hybrid systems, and systems for provision of high grade process heat at industrial locations remote from coal-fired plants, as a means for reducing pollution in populated and industrial areas. The research program envisaged for investigating the above proposals would include a general assessment of the problems from the viewpoints of both technical and economic feasibility, leading to the identification of specific problem areas.
