ABSTRACT:
The need for counterflow heat exchangers in the ANU design of a large scale solar plant is apparent. The heat exchangers involved will be required to heat or cool either ammonia or a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen gases over the range from ambient t0 700 c, at pressures around 300

atmospheres. Over this range species properties vary considerably and digital techniques are necessary in a domain where standard formulae are inapplicable due to this variation. The present report describes a numerical study of the performance of the heat exchanger design, which enabled accurate estimates of the size of the heat exchanger required. The report does not contain a theoretical basis for the heat exchanger configuration, as this was primarily determined by the difficulties associated with manufacture.
