This is as much a love story as a sailing story. Tami, the protagonist, loses her British fiancee at sea while delivering a boat from Tahiti to San Diego. She then has to survive by jury rigging a mast and setting course for the Hawaai. I found the sailing parts of the story the most interesting by

far and would have welcomed more detail, more story on the sailing. What was also of great interest is the running conversation Tami plays in her head to keep her emotionally stable during the 41 days she is at sea alone. Ultimately, this is not so much either a sailing yarn or a love story, but the narrative of a young woman's coming of age through the self reliance necesitated and learned because of a tragedy at sea.
