Terror begins when the crew of a spaceship investigates a transmission from a desolate planet and discover a life form that is perfectly evolved to annihilate mankind. Each crew member is slain until only Ripley is left.

Media reviews

A Gothic horror move set in outer space, ALIEN proved that material derided as B-movie fodder could be handled with finesse and glossy production values, without diminishing the thrills or polishing over the hard-edged horror... In the end, it is fair to say that ALIEN is probably the most

beautiful piece of filmmaking ever about a terrifying subject.

Deadly alien on a spaceship.

Not nearly as intense or scary as the sequel, but it's a much better movie. Very pretty to look at (a good contender for Best Art Direction of All Time). Exceptionally geeky for a mainstream horror film and/or a post-Star Wars sci-fi film.

Classic horror movie, basically a haunted house flick set on a spaceship--a creepy, slimey spaceship. As with many great monster movies, you don't really get a good look at the critter...until it's too damned late.

A crew of a spaceship are forced to fight for survival against a terrifying alien lifeform and escape.

Possibly the most iconic blend of the sci-fi and horror genres, Alien does so tremendously and in a way that just works so well. There is a growing sense of dread as you have a sense things are

going to get bad, but it is paced so magnificently and framed against a simply creepy atmosphere that has made this a certified classic for both genres. The VFX, also, are superb; this feels like a '90s movie, and I mean that in the best possible way. The effects all look like they're decades ahead of their time, but they're from the '70s. The acting is also done well from a great cast, making for an amazing and thrilling horror tale set in space. Highly recommended.

Content Concerns: Violence and language are the two biggest causes for concern: the violence does get rather bloody at times, though not particularly gory except for the "scene," which even that isn't as bad as I expected. Language, though, does contain uses of both stronger and milder language, including a couple uses of "f-ck" and some unfortunate uses of blasphemy.

Every time I watch this I am creeped out! I love how Scott uses the vastness of space and the open spaces of the Nostromo to full effect- a masterclass in sound and how to keep your monster hidden- what we don't see is the scariest part!
