I had a little trouble getting started, but once I did, I couldn't really put it down. While meeting the many characters: Noel, Alexa, Archie, Isobel, Edie, Henry, Edmund, Virginia (and more!), you soon learn they are all connected to the central character, elderly Violet Aird (Vi). I would add
Show More
that another character is Scotland. All of the characters come together for Vi's 78th birthday, and for a big, fancy, house party and dance at a minor character's home. Questions arise throughout the novel: why did Pandora, Archie's sister, leave so many years ago and never return? Is Edie's cousin Lottie really crazy, is she dangerous, and what secrets does she harbor? What happened to Archie during the war? But all are resolved, in a satisfactory way. There is love, happiness, sadness, and a myriad of human feelings and emotions, all mixed with simple, mundane activities. Just like life.
Pilcher has written many novels, some best sellers, and most or all set in England or Scotland, I think. Her writing style captures the essence of the surroundings, but I think her skill is in her characters, and their relationships.

I adore Rosamunde Pilcher. September is one of her finest works - beautiful and lovely.

Get this book out for a rainy weekend. You'll want to have a blanket and time to let the stories unfold. I think it's lovely.

September has a classical sense of time and place giving you an insight into the beauty of the Scottish Highlands...very similar style of writing to Sarah Challis or Jilly Cooper...great author.

Another warm saga from Pilcher, focused on a party in September in the Scottish countryside. The ending was tinged with sadness, but I enjoyed the story.

Rosamund Pilcher is one of my favorite authors. I loved the setting and the story and have this book on my reread list!

The Shell Seekers remains on my list of favorites books and I was pleased to see Pilcher used key characters from "The Shell Seekers" in this book, September.

Noel is a self-absorbed but integral character in Shell Seekers. It was interesting to see him grow emotionally and have a better

understanding of his upbringing; appreciate all that had happened when he was growing up and the sacrifices his mother made. If you read the previous book, and think you know Noel Keeling, his love interest in September will surprise you.

It’s set in Scotland, it has amazing characters and you will be happy you went on this journey with the Aird family, see what becomes of Pandora and Archie and Isobel. This is a book I won’t be trading in at the local paperback swap because one day, I will read it again.

All of Pilcher's books are good reads and the time spent reading them is never a waste!

Lovely, but predictable and dated.

While I would not have added this book to the stack I meant to read had it not been for the September Cats, I really enjoyed the story once I got into it. A multigenerational story of the sort not often written today, we follow the lives and relationships of two Scottish families over the course of

a summer from May to September culminating in a big party they have all been looking forward to attending. There are surprises and changes and even some romance as the summer advances to autumn.

I would definitely read something else by this author at some point.

I love Rosamunde Pilcher's writing. Sigh. I had no idea that a character in this book also appeared in her later book, "The Shell Seekers." That character is Noel Keeling, son of Penelope Keeling.

I tend to stay away from sad books, and this book ended up dealing with a long-term illness and

suicide. However, Rosamunde's writing style is such that if I had known, I would still have read this book. Life comes with all kinds of unexpected disappointments and even tragedies. She manages to write books that deal with those topics but make you glad that you read what she wrote, and glad to be alive. I am a big fan of her work.
