Description
From the publication of his first book in 1926, Langston Hughes was hailed as the poet laureate of black America, the first to commemorate the experience of African Americans in a voice that no reader, black or white, could fail to hear. Lyrical and pungent, passionate and polemical, this volume is a treasure-an essential collection of the work of a poet whose words have entered our common language.

These Poems are directed primarily at an African American audience; yet it would be as hard to find people
who do not deeply respond to "I have known rivers,"
just as they are ready to "...arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,"
having no idea where or what it is.
This little volume is one of the
so many poems that dance to us as songs.
And, given the current unsettled state of America,
"...a dream deferred..." encompasses our Truth.
