Summary: This book talks about the life of Jane Goodall from the time she was a young girl up until present day. When Jane was a toddler her father bought her a stuffed chimpanzee named Jubilee that Jane loved. Jane enjoyed being outside and exploring the world around her. She especially liked

learning about animals. Jane and her parents and younger sister, Judy lived in London until World Ward II started and it became too dangerous. Jane had several jobs before finally finding one that she enjoyed in Africa. Louis Leakey sent Jane to live at the Gombe Stream Game Reserve where she began to study chimpanzees. For the first several months her mother Vanne lived there with her. At first she could not get close to the chimps and had to use binoculars to see them. After a while the chimps allowed Jane to get closer to them and she was able to observe more of their behaviors. Over the years she learned about how they used tools and cared for their young. She also learned that they had very distinct personalities and could be violent. National Geographic was very interested in the work she was doing. She later got her doctorate from Cambridge University. Now Jane travels around the world talking about the importance of protecting wildlife. She also has founded several organizations that help with wildlife conservation.

Review: This was the first of the books from this series that I have read an I really enjoyed it. I think it included a lot of interesting and valuable information about Jane Goodall and the work she has done throughout her life. Many people do not realize how much she struggled before being able to get close to the wild chimpanzees. This book also talks a lot about Jane's childhood and how she became so fascinated by animals which a lot of people do not know about. This would be an excellent resource for students to use while doing a research project. I liked that there were some simple illustrations just to break up the text a little bit.

things life. It also talks about the conservation work she is doing for wildlife.

Personal reaction- I like this book. I remember hearing about Jane Goodall when I was younger and wising I could be like her and “go play” with chimps all day. This book would be a really good resource for children.

Classroom extension-
1.“Being with the chimps” Have the students write a paragraph or two about what they think it would be like studying and being so close to wild chimpanzees.
2.“My chimpanzees”. Have the students write a paragraph about what animal they would chose to study if they were given the opportunity to do what Jane did. Have them answer why they chose that animal? What information would they want to learn about that animal and different questions along that line.
