The theme of the book is survival. Eugene is stranded when his boat gets in an accident. His favorite word is Terrific and it reoccurs throughout the book. He is then stranded on an island where he meets a parrot who is also stranded. They then go about making a boat so that they can be rescued and

once again the boat sinks, but not before they are rescued by the boat they crash into. Then, Eugene is left on the pier in Bermuda by the ships captain, wondering where the parrot is. Once the boat leaves Eugene realizes that the parrot has stayed with him. The parrot and Eugene end up in the end with the word “terrific”.

A sweet story about a grumpy, old man who speak sarcastically and generally has a bad attitude being shipwrecked and finding a friend.

A funny tale about a man named Eugene who always sees the negative side to each situation. It seems that everytime something looks brighter, something else makes it worse. It has a great humor that adults get but I am unsure if young children would understand why he is so grumpy. In the end, Eugene

is happy and for that reason I think anyone can agree that having someone around makes us all happier.

I loved the illustration. The author does good job mixing humor into his writing. It's the story of Eugene, who wins a trip to Bermuda. and all he said is'Terrific,' 'I'll probably get a sunburn.' He doesn't get sunburn but something worse happens. Good book for K-1

Nobody is a lucky as him, or should I say unlucky. Vacation or not, this story has a great adventure that kids will love to read.

A grumpy man, who seems to have not such good luck in life, or not such a good outlook at least, wins a trip to Bermuda. When his ship sinks, he has an "terrific" adventure and finally meets something that makes him smile, a parrot named Lenny. at the end of his adventure, his sarcastic "terrific"

finally becomes a TERRIFIC! with a smile on his face.

'Terrific,' says Eugene, after winning an all-expenses-paid vacation in Bermuda. 'I'll probably get a really nasty sunburn.' Unfortunately, Eugene's luck is a lot worse than that. First, his cruise ship sinks, then he ends up stranded on a tiny island. But Eugene isn't alone. There's another

castaway, a parrot with a busted wing, who tells him what there is to eat and drink and how to build a sailboat. Cranky Eugene pays attention, and now his luck begins to change.

Grumpy old Eugene wins a trip to Bermuda. While most people would be thrilled, Eugene can only see the negative. 'Terrific,' he says, 'I'll probably get a sunburn.' When he gets stranded on a desert island, his line is 'Terrific! I'll probably get eaten by cannibals.' He keeps up this attitude no

matter what happens to him, sarcastically saying, 'Terrific!' and then predicting the worst possible thing that could happen to him given the circumstances. When he meets Lenny the parrot on the island, he ignores the bird's positive attitude and good ideas, continuing with his 'Terrific's. Lenny shows Eugene how they can build a boat to get off the island, and though he agrees to help, Eugene continues to be pessimistic. Finally, they make it to see and are rescued by some sailors. Strangely, Lenny doesn't talk to the sailors and only communicates with Eugene. When the sailors dock in Bermuda, Eugene is relieved, but assumes that Lenny will take off. However, Lenny jumps on his shoulder in a clear offer of companionship. Eugene's response is 'Terrific!,' but this time he really means it!

This was a fun and quirky story about a grumpy old man who lives through an unbelievable tale, meeting a new friend along the way. Jon Agee's simple but colorful illustrations are entirely amusing and evoke memories of some of the great Sunday funny pagers. His characters follow right along in that

style with delightful predictability, but always a final twist.

This book has a great variety of voices making it a fun one to read aloud. It goes from one unbelievable scene to another, making it exciting and engaging. Eugene has good luck and much bad luck, but has the same reaction to it all. He wins a cruise only to get stranded on a deserted island.

Luckily a super smart parrot instructs him how to build a boat and the two are rescued. They make it to Bermuda, but the parrot doesn't want to stay with his rightful owners so he hides to stay with Eugene. After all that adventure he finally found a friend!

Eugene Mudge makes a friend with a parrot and instead of a sarcastic terrific from Mr. Mudge, the new terrific has a different meaning.

Eugene a grumpy, old man who speaks with a lot of sarcasm and acts this way in every situation-good or bad. He has the good luck of winning a cruise to Bermuda, but then gets stranded on a deserted island. Luckily a talking parrot on the island instructs him how to build a boat and the two are

rescued by a boat of fishermen. They finally make their way to Bermuda, but the parrot doesn't want to stay with his rightful owners the fishermen, so he hides to stay with new friend Eugene. A cute book with sophisticated humor-would be fun for the reader and the listener.

Eugene expects the worst and usually gets it, even when he wins an all-expenses trip to Bermuda. This picture book follows Eugene as he is shipwrecked on an (almost) deserted island. Eugene's luck changes when he runs into a parrot with some unusual talents. An amusing tale for adults as well as
Show More
children. This seemingly simple picture book has been highly lauded by book reviewers, librarians, and other children's book experts; I have to admit that while I enjoyed the book, I don't quite understand why it's been so highly lauded.

Good book, simple drawings, colorful. Eugene is a grumpy old fellow and he becomes friends with a parrot that saves his life. Fun book for children and the love of a pet.

This is a nice story about a man with a negative attitude who ends up with a friend he didn't expect to have.

A hilariously sarcastic use of the word Terrific is what drives this book and creates humor for both children and adults. This book could be used effectively in a classroom to introduce the concept of irony.

"Terrific" is about a man called Eugene who wins a cruise to Bermuda. It seems like he is pessimistic, so he says to himself that he is going to get sunburned. Unfortunately he doesn't get sun burned, but worst than that. His ship sank and he was the only one wasn't rescued. He ended up on an
Show More
island with a parrot on it. The word Eugene kept repeating was "terrific." When he saw the parrot said terrific, because he thought the parrot couldn't speak. In fact, the parrot not only spoke, but also had an idea of how to build a boat. The parrot drew the plan on sand and Eugene made it. They were rescued by a trawler and were dropped off in Bermuda. The parrot, which at this time we know belonged to the people on the trawler, decided that it wanted to stay with Eugene. When Eugene learned of this he said "terrific." This book is a nice adventurous and funny book for small children.

I think this is a great book. I like how lovably negative the main character is. I think it has a great message of finding friends, and fun, in unexpected places. The simple art adds to the book a lot.

Eugene is a grumpy old man who always expects the worst, so it's hardly surprising that his surprise cruise to Bermuda is interrupted when the ship goes down, leaving Eugene stranded on an island with a talking parrot. A sweet story about a grouch who finds adventure and friends in unexpected

Such a cute book. I love that the parrot would only talk to him. The art seemed to match the story line in a strange way.

I like that the character starts off as a grumpy, sarcastic person, but turns his attitude around at the end of the book. The messages of this book are great for kids, and that's to be grateful for the things that we're given, to never take simple things for granted, and to hold on to hope, because

Summary: The story of a man named Eugene who takes a trip to Bermuda and runs into terrible luck. After a series of unfortunate events including his boat sinking, Eugene finds a parrot that befriends him and helps him get through his struggles. Eugene listens to the parrot and finds a better time
Show More
for himself and his newfound friend.

Personal reflection: This is another one of my favorites by Jon Agee. I think this book in particular has a good message that as long as you have a trusting friend and partner, any bad mistake can easily be fixed. This book is also a concept book for not sweating over the small things in life and making the most from what you have.

Class Use: I would use this book when students need a break from testing or after recess because it is silly. I would also ask students to think about what they would have done if they were in Eugene's shoes.
