This book is about a little girl who lives in the Appalachian Mountains and is taught by a friend how to read. It focuses on never giving up.

This realistic fiction book tells the story of amber, a young girl who has never learned to read or write, and how she makes a friend who is determined to teach her. Her friend Anna spends days and days teaching her the different letters and sounds, and finally, Amber is able to read on her own.

Anna wants to teach Amber to read, but Anna sadly has to leave because her family had only been in town while her father built a road there. Amber gets letters from Anna, but cannot write back. She then decides she will write back, and practices copying words from her book, and finally writes Anna a letter. This makes Anna very happy, and she writes back as well.
