My 3-yr-old son loves the "Small" books from Lois Lenski, and this is a particular favorite. It's a simple book about a journey from Tiny Town to the big city. Engineer Small, Fireman Shorty and Conductor Little all do their jobs to get the train to its destination. The level of detail is just
Show More
right; enough to explain things but not enough to lose the thread of the story.

Engineer Small runs a little train. His helpers include Fireman Shorty and Conductor Little. It is their job to get the train up to the big town so everyone in the little town can get their work and errands finished. A wonderful story for little train lovers, the illustrations are a treat.

In this book we meet a little rat who doesn't like to practice her violin. Her family exposes her to all types of music and she loves to watch music, just not practice. Through this book you see little rats journey from a music listener to a music maker with passion. This book has a great message
Show More
that even though you may want something very bad and it may not come easily that practice makes perfect. She starts to practice for her recital and then performs to find that the passion for violin has always been there. This is a great short chapter book for new readers or even great for a listener because the pictures certainly help tell their story with their colorful and detailed illustrations.

What I most liked about this book was all the details about the names and functions of different parts of the engine that are incorporated into the story. It describes how they prepare the train for take off. Along the way, attention is brought to the things the engineer need to watch out for, how

the express train passes the little train, etc. For a simple little story, surprisingly informative. Perfect for an inquisitive 4 year old!

This book is about an Engineer named Small. He goes through an adventure on his train as he grabs passengers like Fireman Shorty and cargo along the way. As Small starts his journey to Tinytown he makes sure that you feel the love he has for his train. Small goes into detail about how the train
Show More
runs and the parts to the train all while giving a tour of it and giving factual information.

This is a great book, especially for train lovers. The detail that the author goes into about the train parts and how the train runs is very informative. Children could learn a lot about how the process is and what it takes for the train to travel. Boys in the class would especially love this book.

Extension ideas would be to maybe have a train station set up in one of the center areas. They could learn together on how to put the train together and use there imagination as to where they are going and if they have stops to make.
Another idea would be to color a train coloring page. The children could use colorful colors just like the book.

Sorry. It's meant to be informative, but though it pictures a 'sand dome' up near the smokestack, it never hints what that is. I did learn that, apparently, All aboard!" does not mean "Everybody get on board; last chance" as I always thought, but is rather a report to the engineer that "Everyone is

aboard!" (If you tell me that indeed I was right all along and Lenski misled me, I'll take another star off my rating!)"
