A boy thinks that he has an ordinary dog. His dog knows all the dog tricks but that is about it. He is a boring dog. One morning, the boy sees his dog come out of a limousine and wonders what his dog does at night. He decides to follow him that night and finds out that his dog is the manager of a

The Night I Followed the Dog is a wonderful fantasy book with outstanding illustrations. The book is about a boy following his pet dog on his nightly escapades. It is very funny and could be used in a lesson about personification.

Summary- A boy is curious about what his dog does in the evenings when he is sent to his doghouse. He is very surprised one night when he decides to follow his dog into the doghouse and finds a world he never knew existed.

Strength- Logographic Words
Several words on each page have pictures on or

around the word that describe its meaning. For example, "lay down" is written on a sketch of a bed and "roll over" is written on a sketch of a rolling pin.

Use in the Classroom- This would be a great book to read as a writing prompt. After reading ask students to write an adventure story about a time they followed the __________.

This was a cute story about a boy who gets curious about what his dog does at night, so he follows him. He finds out that his dog is the owner of a club for dogs where they can go to relax after a long day. The words are written very creatively, with little doodles around words- such as the word
Show More
"leash" written to look like a dog leash. The vocabulary is basic (a second grade level) and the story is easy to follow, but funny and entertaining.

Teaching Extension:
After reading this story, have students write a creative piece about what their pets do at night.

This book is about a boy who finds out about his dogs "night life." The dog is "humanized" and partakes in a lavish life during the night. It has pictures and mentions different dog breeds dressed in tuxedos and gowns doing human things (dancing, talking, singing, playing instruments, etc.). It is

a funny and engaging concept, but not written well. The illustrations are well done and the font of the text is very good. Many of the verbs and nouns are written to look like the word they describe. It would be a good book for a student who loves dogs. Some students would also find the font of the text funny and different. The combination of the text, illustrations, and concept of the book would help a student practice comprehension skills. This is not a book I would share with a class, but have it available for independent reading.

"The Night I Followed the Dog" is a story that takes you into the world of a famous dog. The dog in the story is not a typical dog. This story takes imagination to another level and lets a child imagine the life of a famous dog. The writing in the story is fanominal. Certain words in the text have

I was so excited to get to read this book again since it was my favorite book as a child. My mom and I would read this book two times a week and it would never get old to me. One of the main reasons that I loved this book was because of the fonts that were used through out the book. When the dog

says "roll over" the font is rolled over. It is these subtle adjustments that make a book all the better.
Wondering what a dog does in his dog house or while you are sleeping is a common question that goes through many children's heads. This book opens a child's imagination to explore the possibilities of their dog going out while they are asleep with their dog friends and having a crazy "dog house/mansion." This can be related to a question that many girls may ask, "what do my dolls do at night when I fall asleep?"
Overall, this book is for beginning readers as well as experienced readers looking for an exciting and well illustrated book. The illustrations in this book are wonderful! They fit the sentences being read and bring them to life.

Review:

Summary: The story starts with a little boy talking about how he had a boring dog. He always let his dog out at night and inside in the early morning. One morning he opened his door a little early to see his dog getting out of a car with a tux on. That night he decided to follow him. He
Show More
followed his dog into his dog house. Inside of the dog house there was a bathroom, kitchen and living room. He watched as his dog put on a tux and walked out the door. He followed him all the way down the street and into a building that had "dog house" on it. He sees his dog and the dog told the owner that this was his place where all the dogs go to talk about their long day's and relax. The dog talks about how he loves it at this place because they have no leashes, masters, or rules. His dog was very popular and had such a blast with all of the dogs in the community.

This book is full of mystery and excitement, I really became intrigued with what would happen next. I enjoyed reading this book because it shows perspective from the dogs point of view rather than a humans. The illustrations were amazing and they were perfect for this book. I would recommend this

I liked this picture book for several reasons. First, the entire book was very suspenseful as it kept readers on their toes not knowing what the dog would do next. It was very suspenseful as one can only imagine what kind of trouble their pets get into while they are not home. The story was very
Show More
believable because the author used such descriptive words to describe the actions, dialogue, and inside thoughts of each character. I think that I really liked this book because when I was little I always would wonder what my dog would do when we left the house. I always imagined that they had parties with other dogs or something unrealistic and silly. However, I believe that young readers may find this relatable as they have pets of their own and may offer a chance to use their imagination. Finally, the illustrations helped to show the humor of the story and present a visual image of some challenging or unfamiliar words. For example, the word tuxedo may not be familiar to young children but the illustration presented on that particular page is of the dog in a white tuxedo. The pictures really help to bring the crazy actions that the dog did to life. The main idea of this book was to tell a story of a dog sneaking out of the house and being followed by their owner, for the fun and enjoyment of readers.

This is a hilarious book that I have treasured since my elementary school days. It's suspenseful text keeps the reader curious and engaged. The story is the boy is trying to find out where his dog goes at night because one morning peeked out his window and saw his dog step out of a limousine. It's
Show More
cute because the text is illustrated to play a pun on certain words. It is great for engaging young readers, teaching about predictions and confirming one's predictions. It is also relatable to young children who have pets.

This is a fun children's picture book about the night a young boy followed his dog. The boy used to think his dog was ordinary, until the morning he saw him get out of a limousine wearing a tuxedo. The next night he followed him to see where he went and discovered that his dog had a fancy doghouse
Show More
and then he traveled to a nightclub for dogs that his dog owns! His dog explains that it's a place for dogs to relax after a difficult day and just be dogs. This story keeps readers in suspense to find out what happens when his dog disappears. One could also discuss the interesting switch in power when the boy leaves his "world" and enters the world of his dog and the dog is a big deal. Mainly though, I just like to think of it as a “what if” book or to imagine what dogs really think or do when we aren't around like the author says. The illustrations in this book are nicely painted and uses mostly muted or soft colors with the occasional pop or color. The best part of the book, besides the story itself is the actual text. It is hand lettered and the author has turned key words into doodles. This really helps young readers to learn and recognize those specific vocab words and can even allow them to read them along with an adult if they are still learning to read. For example the word garbage was placed inside a doodle of a garbage bag so kids can associate the word with the picture. They draw your attention and keep you interested in the story. Teachers could have their students use their imaginations and come up with a story about their own pets when they aren't around and if they don't have a pet they can write using a pet they would like to have.

This story is hilarious. A little boy follows his dog at night. His dog gets out of a limousine and goes to a night club, which the dog is in charge of. At the nightclub, their are other dogs are singing and dancing as well. As the night ends the dog goes back home in the morning as if nothing ever

happened. This book as to be one of my favorite children's books, it reminds me a lot of Toy Story in the sense of not knowing what your toys, or in this case his dog, does when they think no one is watching. I am sure children reading this will now want to stay up and watch what their pets do at night when they are asleep. I do not see the underlying "lesson" if you will in this book, nonetheless, it is a funny book to read to your children if you want to make them laugh. I really enjoyed this!
