With simple text and luminous artwork, children's author/illustrator Peter McCarty explores one day in the life of the eponymous Hondo and Fabian, a dog and cat duo who live together and are good friends. While Hondo heads to the seashore, to spend the day romping with his fellow canine, Fred, the
Show More
feline Fabian remains at home with the baby, having his own form of fun. But at the end of the day, the two are together again, enjoying their evening meal, and their favorite napping places.

Awarded a Caldecott Honor in 2003, Hondo and Fabian has a gentleness to it that is very appealing, with a simple text of no more than a sentence per page - "Two happy dogs dive in the waves. / Fabian dives for the door." - and gorgeous artwork that just seems to glow on the page. My first book by Peter McCarty was Henry in Love, which I appreciated for the artwork, but found rather uninspired, textually speaking. Here, however, the words and images work together flawlessly, resulting in one of those quietly impressive books, whose appeal can take the reader by surprise. Recommended for very young cat and dog lovers - McCarty clearly understands his felines and canines! - and for anyone looking for lovely, comforting bedtime fare for younger, preschool-age children. I myself will definitely be tracking down the sequel, to see what happens when Fabian Escapes.

Beautiful artwork. Written for the very young but my older son just loves it. He laughs at Hondo and Fabian's animal adventures and delights when they're reunited for the evening. A classic.

This is realistic fiction because the animals don't talk or act like humans. This is s desciption of the activities of Hondo and Fabian for a day. Dogs like to dive in the waves, and cats like to play with toilet paper (at least my cats do).
The style of this book is effective for early readers.

There is a sentence or two on each page accompanied by an illustration. The sentences are simple and short, but they are enough for the book.

Hondo and Fabian are a cat and dog who are bests but complete opposites. One liked adventure and the other did not.

My own personal experience I can relate because I stay to myself and my brother and sister are outgoing.

An classroom extension idea would be to have students share things that they

like to do for fun or have students bring pictures of places that they have gone for fun to share with other students.

I am in love with McCarty's illustrations --- the roundness, the softness --- and the story is pretty cute, too. For me, the illustrations are what make the book art -- I could pull out pages and frame them!

Good read-aloud, muted illustrations, similarity in a day for two friends even though it is spent apart.

I love the illustrations in this book, they are so endearing and intriguing. This is an everyday story about the relationship between a cat and dog who live with the same human family, and I can imagine it having a comforting and calming effect on children.

This books amazes me by its simplicity-- which almost reads as a minimalist poem-- and it's soft, incredibly cute images of a cat (Fabian) and dog (Hondo). Animal and pet lovers of all ages will love, love, love this book.

This book is about Hondo the dog who gets to go to the beach and play with his friend Fred, while Fabian the cat spends the day at home. This book is very true to what dogs and cats actually do. The illustrations are beautiful and this is a very nice read.

Fabian the cat definitely gets the short end of the plot here, but the art is great and Curious Girl loves it.

Hondo, the dog, and Fabian, the cat, start and end their day the same but, have a very different sequence of events throughout the day. Hondo spends the day out of the house, while Fabian stayed home. This is a good book to use when referring to house pets or the differences between cats and

dogs.(Winner of the Caldecott Award)

Hondo and Fabian follows two characters, a dog (Hondo) and a cat (Fabian), and their activities over a course of a day. While Hondo goes to the beach with his dog friend, Fred, Fabian stays home with the Baby, playing and engaging in semi-devious behavior. Both characters are good friends and the

story, while it shows them as having individual identities, as separate creatures with their own natural needs/ interests, it ties the two together as being the domestic mates and pets in a particular household.
This book is a dreamy, impressionistic view of two animals. As stated above, it shows two animals engaging in behaviors and activities which reflect their interests and personalities as cat and dog. Something I found to be intriguing was how each of these animals were depicted. The dog, Hondo, is outdoorsy, active, and expressive, while the cat, Fabian, is domesticated, somewhat sporadic, and emotional. I think that these characters' model certain psychological and mental understandings of their species. I feel that while the images are pleasing and add to the mellow mood of the story, they further capture and convey messages to readers too. The audience is able to see the underlying concepts of inclusivity and diversity and how each thing relates and plays out on a daily basis. Yes, Hondo and Fabian are friends and "equals" to a certain extent: they are pets to their owners and each have their respective spaces in the household. I find though that how their owners relate to each of them is rather interesting and reflective of the demeanors each of the creatures are in the real world. Cats are more to themselves and indoor creatures while dogs are considered outside and more interactive. I think that Peter McCarty's book shows young readers a very intimate image of such things (not necessarily outright) and engages us in the story by his full illustrations and coziness of the book.

Even though this book is so simple, there is still much that can be gained from it. The parallel stories of a dog having an adventure at the beach with friends and a cat staying home skillfully demonstrate how there is no one absolute definition of fun. Neither of the animals have a better day than
Show More
the other, which validates extroverted as well as introverted ideals. This is important concept to teach children so that they won’t be ashamed of having a different idea of fun or enjoying different activities. All of the images are soft, soothing, and familiar. Overall, they add a sense of peace and equanimity to this tale of equality.

Hondo and Fabian is both written an illustrated by Peter McCarty. It is the perfect bedtime story for the tiny animal lover. Hondo and Fabian each get to have an adventure: Hondo gets to go out to play at the beach while Fabian has a lovely time at home playing with the baby and unrolling some

toilet paper. At the end of the day, both the extroverted Hondo and his introverted counterpart Fabian, are reunited with full tummies and warm bed. The illustrations add to the gentle dreamlike story and would be a wonderful way to send a little one off to sleep.

This well-deserved Caldecott Honor book is delightful. It is a simple tale of Hondo the dog who has a trip to the beach frolicking in the water and Fabian the cat who stays home with the baby. There is a dream-like, air brushed quality to the illustrations.

Hondo the dog and Fabian the cat are pets that live together. They each wake up to go on separate adventures. Hondo has fun with another friend dog, while Fabian plays with the baby at home. They go to sleep together in their favorite places at the end of the night. This books theme is all about

adventure!

The pictures are pretty to please the adult buyer, the text is simple and authentic to please the tot listener, but instead of the best of both, *I* found the sum to be weak and unappealing.
