This book has been my favorite book so far. I read this book aloud to my friends even they got a laugh at the children’s book. The writing creates so much “flow”. I read this book so fast, continuously flipping through the pages. The writing and use of rhyme really draws the reader in. The
Show More
writing uses like an AABBCC rhyme scheme. I love it because its so simple. Lines like “The goat just nibbled at the edges. Then she ate all of MacDonald’s hedges” make reading enjoyable for me. The point of view was third person explaining how Old MacDonald first got his farm. I like the view better than if Macdonald would have told the story. The language is patterned and creates a brightening tone if that makes sense. The author creates a problem that is solved by MacDonald getting animals, vegetables or plants. The plot is well organized and lets the reader think back to all the animals on Macdonald’s farm in the first book. The illustrations are modern compared to the older book. They are still appealing and the use of bright colors is a great touch. The pages stick out and the words have to be written in white in the soil because on some pages there is so much going on above the soil. The big idea is for students to learn that MacDonald just didn’t magically get his farm but showed children the reasoning and the time it took to create his huge farm.

Old MacDonald teams up with The Little Red Hen to solve the problem of his muddy back yard. Together they compost, build raised garden beds, and worm beds. Not long after they plant the vegetable seeds Old MacDonald has a yard full of fresh vegetables to share with the community. The easy flowing

rhythm will surely capture the child's interest.

Old Macdonald had a yard, and he mowed the grass a lot because it grew often. He loved his yard, but it was difficult to mow. He decided to get a goat to help with the grass, but the goat just nibbled the hedges. Old Macdonald decided to get a hen, but the hen was very smart. She went to college,

and she helped Old Macdonald cover the grass with dirt. The Hen gave Old Macdonald earth friendly advice. Once it rained there was a lot of mud in his backyard, and worms used his backyard to live. Eventually old Macdonald ordered seeds and planted them. Eventually many vegetables grew, and many neighbors bought fruit and vegetables from him. I enjoyed the book because it encourages me to take care of the environment, and it made me want to start my own vegetable garden. For a project for students, I would want students to grow some vegetables, and I would want them to find earth friendly ways to grow them.

E-I-E-I-O_ how old MacDonald got his farm by Sierra_ Judy
Listened to this story. Story of how Mac got his farm. Love how this is the perfect story for starting youngsters into gardening.
Mac didn't want to mow his lawn. He's tired of doing that....he got a goat who would nibble at the edges then

he'd eat the hedges.
He then got a chicken, she told him how to put newspaper, shirt, water from rain and he had mud then. The neighbors protested, they didn't like the changes.
Garbage will make things better as they layered the kitchen waste and he continued to get more animals.
Compost it came to be and he got seeds, and before he knew it he had a garden that was growing food.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).
