My first IRA in a classroom was with the previous book in the series, Ladybug Girl and Bumblebee Boy. This series by husband and wife writer-illustrating team follows a young girl, Ladybug Girl, and her trusty companion, Bingo the dog. Each book in the series addresses a character quality, fear, or
Show More
problem that young children encounter. This time, a first trip to the beach brings about a fear of the big, vast ocean and its towering waves. The book sweetly follows the process of overcoming a fear, complete with the support of the protagonist's parents and older brother. The illustrations are pen and ink meets Manga and there are several creative usages of font, color etc in the text. A definite recommendation both within the classroom and for reading in the home.

While Lulu is quite charming, this book was mostly uneventful. I might read this with my 3 year old daughter in preparation to go to the beach. I enjoyed looking at the simply illustrated pages, as they gives us a glimpse into what Lulu is feeling as she faces her fears.

Fiction; I enjoyed reading this book for a couple of reasons. I love ladybugs so the illustrations were a plus. There were illustrations before the story began showing Lulu (the main character) reading about the beach and then driving to the beach. It was good build up and made me excited to find
Show More
out what was going to happen. In the book, Lulu was excited to go to the beach but when she got there was afraid of the ocean because the waves were so big. Eventually, she entered the ocean without realizing it and once she did she loved it. The main point of the story is that Lulu was able to overcome her fear using her alter ego, Ladybug girl. It is inspiring and can be used to talk to children about courage and bravery.

Lulu is going to the beach for her first time and is super excited. She is curious about how the beach will be. When she gets to the ocean she runs to the edge of the water and notices that the ocean goes on and on and makes a huge roaring noise. She said she had no idea it was going to be so big
Show More
and noisy and she was in shock at seeing something so ginormous. Kids have so much wonder and curiosity that this book is great for younger kids that wonder about the world around them. Lulu is too afraid to get in the water and by the end of the story she still is too afraid and when they go home she regrets that she never went into the ocean.

Comments:
The illustrations are very detailed and colorful. The story is well told and makes sense. This book would be great to use when students are learning about the beach and what different things that could be done at the beach.

In this book, Lulu (the ladybug girl) goes to the beach for the first time. In the beginning, she is very afraid to go in the water. However, after her pail gets lost in the waves she finds courage to go in and starts enjoying it. Lovely illustrations!
I would use this book in my classroom to foster
Show More
a conversation about courage and how can we developed it.

Personal Reactions:
This is a great story about overcoming you fears. This story might be a good one to read before Summer vacation.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1. Students could draw pictures of the beach and the ocean.
2. I would bring seashells and have the students listen to see if they can hear the ocean.

Amazing illustrations, and story line to prompt students to overcome fear. This book is great for children and so helpful to keep their interest but also teach them concepts of strength and mastering the mind.

A gentle story of a young girl who is a bit overwhelmed by her first trip to the ocean. The story could so easily have been an earnest tale of parent or big brother helping little one Overcome Her Fears, yawn, yawn, yawn, but instead, the author lets Ladybug Girl explore, imagine, and discover the
Show More
joys of the beach all on her own.

It is lulu’s first trip to the beach and she quickly realizes that she has a fear of the ocean. Even know she had never been to the beach she knew she was going to love it however, the ocean is really big and loud. So she decided to build sandcastles, fly a kite, and get ice cream with her dog

Bingo instead. When the ocean gets ahold of her favorite pail it is time for Ladybug Girl because she brave. Then Lulu realizes that she is in the ocean and that it is fun. Her brother asks if she liked the beach and she tells him that she said that Ladybug girl loves the beach. The genre of this book is realistic fiction.

This book is a great story about going to the beach with your family and the things that you might like and dislike when at the beach.

There are many reasons why I liked this book. One element of the book that I really liked was the language. The language in this story engages readers through its descriptive nature and imagery. For example, in the story the narrator describes the waves on the beach and states that “the ocean
Show More
goes on and on and makes huge roaring sounds.” The language in this phrase allows the reader to imagine and hear the loudness of the waves because the author used descriptive adjectives to explain the sounds of the waves.

Additionally, the plot contributed to why I liked the book. For example, in the book, at the same moment that Lulu, the main character, and her dog, Bingo, decide to dip their feet in a water, a wave crashes that almost pulls them into the ocean. When she looks around and sees that everyone is happily playing in the ocean and does not worry about what happened to them, she realizes that it is okay and normal for that to happen. The timing of this event causes Lulu to face her fear and go into the ocean in order to get an item later on in the story. This plot creates a suspenseful tone that keeps the reader engaged and also is a main contributor to the lesson of the story: it is important to be brave and face your fears.
