This books is about a librarian named Molly McGrew who mistakenly drove her bookmobile into the zoo. While at the zoo, she began to read aloud a Dr. Seuss book, which attracted several animals. As time passed, more and more animals grew fond of books and wanted to read themselves. Molly decided to
Show More
find books that worked best for them, such as waterproof books for the otters. The animals grew to love books so much that they began wanting to write books as well, which is exactly what they did. Molly decided to start a branch library at the zoo, which would be called the zoobrary.
I would read this book to students in kindergarten through second grade. The best time to read this is when learning about zoo animals because it involves various types and certain descriptions about these animals. This would be a good book to read the day before taking a field trip to a local/nearby zoo. Another great time to read this is when encouraging students to read by showing them the importance of it. This importance is emphasized by having the story incorporate animals loving to read. Also, this book could be read when students are learning about words that rhyme because it is a story that is full of rhyming words.

With a rollicking rhyme - "It started the summer of 2002, / When the Springfield librarian, Molly McGrew, / by mistake drove her bookmobile into the zoo." - and exuberantly entertaining illustrations, Wild About Books is one picture-book that just begs to be read aloud! Slowly seduced by the power
Show More
of story, and by the charms of storyteller Molly McGrew, the animal residents of the Springfield zoo eventually find themselves both bibliophiles and budding authors, a process which culminates in the construction of their very own "zoobrary."

Dedicated to the incomparable Dr. Seuss, and in much the same vein, this appealing title would make an excellent story-hour selection. I enjoyed the sing-song style of the text, which moves along at a nice clip, and boasts a rhyming scheme that reads very well, and never feels forced, and found the artwork by Marc Brown (creator of the Arthur books) quite appealing. Humorous and heartwarming, this is a book I would recommend to young bibliophiles and animal lovers, as well as to anyone looking for good children's stories for story-hour or bedtime reading.

This book shows how a bunch of animals at the zoo learned what reading was and went wild. Each animal reads books, then writes them and then they even talk about reviewing them. This is an awesome book to show how great reading is to students. There are also references to books that the animals
Show More
liked best. And they are real books!

This book is one of my favorites. It is about a library bus that collides with a zoo and all of the animals begin to read all of the books. The whole story rhymes. It would be good to tie into a lesson while teaching children about rhyming words. The illustrations are great too. I think many
Show More
children of all ages would enjoy this book. It is illustrated by Marc Brown.

This is a good example of fantasy. It gives animals both animal and human characteristics. So the animals become relatable to the reader, but maintain their animal qualities to remain believable. The story is simple and interesting and draws the reader into this made up world that they sort of want

to be a part of.

My 5-year-old's review: "This is a very good book."
LibraryThing member rlhopper
This book begins when a librarian named Molly McGrew drives her bookmobile into the zoo on accident. At first, the animals were scared and stayed away from Molly McGrew, so Molly McGrew began reading books aloud to all the animals. One by one the animals became very curious and wanted to know what
Show More
this thing called "Reading" was. The animals went wild about reading all kinds of books and some animals even wrote their own books. Molly McGrew was so excited that she hired some animals to build a library right there at the zoo. Once the Zoobrary was open, the animals were so wild about reading that when people came to the zoo to see them they payed them no attention because they were too busy with their books. I really enjoyed reading this book. This book is a great choice if you want to get your students really pumped up about reading.

Wild About Books is about zoo animals who learn what fun it is to read books and create their own stories. One animal decides to read and eventually all the other animals want to add a little spice to their own story. It is extremely funny and easy to follow along with. Small children would enjoy
Show More
Wild About Books because it combines young children's love for animals and they growing desire to be big kids. Wild About Books teaches kids that reading can be fun, and you can make reading what you want it to be. It is an excellent book for small group reading. I would recommend sharing Wild About Books with pre-school to first grade because it introduces them to the idea of independent reading.

This is a wonderful book to read to your students when they are just learning to read or about to start reading small picture books. The book is about a girl named Molly who drives her bookmobile into the zoo. She begins to read to the animals and they are curious about reading and how. She teaches

the animals to read just like you would teach a child how to read.

When the driver of the book mobile, Molly, takes a detour and sets up shop in the local zoo, she slowly but surely creates a love for books in each animal. This book is a great way to introduce libraries to young readers. They can become more comfortable with what is expected of them at libraries
Show More
and what librarians can do to help them. The illustrations by Marc Brown are colorful and active (and great for any Arthur fans!), and the story is good for read-alouds. Ages 5-8.

A librarian accidentally drives her bookmobile into a zoo. The zoo animals soon become fascinated with books. All of the animals are reading the books, learning to take care of them, and soon sort them and catalog them to create a library. Fun, rhyming book that children will enjoy listening to or

This book is about a bunch of different animals at the zoo. It goes through the book talking about how all the animals love to read and why reading is a important aspect of our lives today.

Genre: This is a fantasy book, and is also poetry. It is a fantasy book because it is about animals who learn to love books and create a library for the zoo. It is poetry because the whole story is told in rhyme.

Style: This book uses consonant rhyming all the way through. This is highly effective
Show More
as it makes the book "catchy" and sets a pace for reading.

This book is fantasy because it is full of animals that talk, and read and write. I absolutely love this book because of the rhyming and the pictures. The words just roll off of my tongue and the children love it because they can guess what is coming next. In my opinion, the theme of this book is
Show More
finding joy in reading, no matter who you are, how you read or how you interpret it. I think that the author does an amazing job with the theme of this book, because it is clear what her purpose is behind the text, that everyone can have a joy for reading.

This book is great for students of any age, but primary students might enjoy it most.

This is a good example of fantasy because it personifies animals. The author created a world in which the reader could believe that animals read and enjoy literature.

Wild About Books is a fun, fun book to read aloud! And not just for kids but for adults as well (double-entendres explained on JudySierra.net). And it’s written by and about a librarian! It’s a story of how Springfield librarian, Molly McGrew, accidentally drives her bookmobile into the zoo.

All the animals get excited about “this new something called ‘reading’” and even writing books as well. They get so excited that they even build a “zoobrary.” This is a very good book for reading aloud because it is large (12x9), has brightly colored illustrations and lots of animals to point out.

Phonological Awareness is featured in Wild About Books in a fun and delightful way through rhyming words and a rhythmic cadence. For example:

Hyenas shared jokes with the red-bellied snakes,
And hey howled and they hissed till their funny bones ached.
(hilarious picture of a hyena and snakes reading a joke book with a “Knock, knock” joke and a “Why did the chicken cross the road?” joke)

Exciting, very cute, rhyming book. This is a great book to encourage children to read. This would be a book to teach along with a science lesson about animals.
